My 'aha' moment with some fragrances
« on: October 20, 2011, 09:31:54 PM »
I have long wondered what to do with scents I have and like well enough, but that don't last very long.  I have two in particular - musk oils - that I don't reach for because they just disappear so quickly.  One is Kiehl's, the other Alyssa Ashley.

Tonight I figured it out...I have decided to wear them to bed!  Don't laugh, now - musk is a comfort scent for me, and these will last long enough for me to get to sleep if I hurry.

Problem solved. :)

Good thinking, Listy.  Musk seems to just fit for the fall and winter seasons.
I love a comfort fragrance to fall asleep to.

Well,at the moment I am enjoying wearing Chanel no. 19 (yes, I bought the EDP in the duty free) and I love the scent on my pillow at night! I also love it on my sweaters and scarves.

For years I loved Chanel No. 19. Then I moved away from it and tried other scents for a while. Just a few years ago I got a new No. 19 EDP and was shocked at how much I disliked it, especially when I wore it. It wasn't just "eh" - it was an active dislike.

I was inspired by your post, milla, to give it a whirl a couple of days ago and guess what? I love it again. It smells exactly as I remember it from all those years ago too.

All I can figure is that menopause, medications, and/or stress over the past years affected the way the fragrance smelled on me and/or my sense of smell.

I, too, love to use it exactly as you do, milla. Bedtime and sweaters - not sure why those 2 very different times and places are so appealing.

Now I'm looking forward to trying some other scents that I used to love but had given up on, including No. 5 for evening.

Serge Lutens Gris Clair (w/lavender) is my comfort scent.

The other day I went to the Guerlain perfume counter and asked to try Mitsouko-the perfum! I normally wear the EDT. I have had the EDP, which I like, but I had never tried the 'real' thing. She dabbed, I sniffed and I nearly fainted. It is so beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes. I told my DH about my olfactory experience and the darling man said: 'well Christmas is coming up!' and I said 'No way, it costs such a lot of money, I could buy a sewing machine for the price'.
I am not going to get the perfume (not yet anyway), but I must get me some Mitsouko EDTvery soon. It is getting colder and I love it in Winter...

Would a sewing machine make you this happy?  Just asking...

Yes, I have to say that my Husqvarna does make me happy.

Back to the subject in hand...Lavender scent is the only thing I want at night and that brings comfort.  Hmm....pardon me while I take a nap.

Lavender is nice... I also like Neal's Yard essential oils, which I use with the oil burner. Not in the bedroom, just in the living room after dinner, but the scent drifts up to the bedroom. I love the geranium oil.

There's that Neal's Yard again!  Now I know something else to check out there.  I use and love an oil burner - it just seems simpler than candles and not as powerful as incense.  I also like the wax tarts, but they can be messy to clean out.

My oil preferences are the same as my perfume...amber, musk, sandalwood and the like.

This post and the follow-ups to it convinced me that I simply must test this so I ordered a sample from The Perfumed Court today. Since shipping is about $5 I had to get more than just this so I also ordered a Chanel 4-pc. sampler to see if my renewed appreciation of No. 19 transfers to No. 5 and to try a couple of others I've been interested in.

I can't wait!

I can't wait to hear what you think about everything!  I had a small sample of Mitsouko once and I thought it was beautiful.  One of those scents where I could not stop sniffing my wrist all day, KWIM?

I look at The Perfumed Court often, but have yet to order anything from them.  One of these days...

One of these days, if I can be asked, I think I'll go to Harrods for a little foray in their fragrance department. I'd love to meet Roja Dove! The only thing is, I wish I had someone to share my passion with; none of my friends shares my interest in scents. They like it, but just as something you put on before a night out or a special occasion, whereas I love scent and I wear it every day, especially in Autumn and Winter. In the Summer, I am happy with a beautifully scented shower gel, but in the Winter, I need to be 'cocooned' in a beautiful haze of fragrance.

I don't understand this at all!  I wear fragrance to do housework, to grocery shop, and even to go to sleep.  I would no sooner go without it than I would my basic makeup, and would not feel dressed without it.

I wish I could go to Harrod's with you, milla!
