How do you store your sweaters?
« on: October 25, 2011, 06:32:49 PM »
I wear sweaters with jeans all fall/winter long.  I know that you're supposed to store sweaters folded, I find that most of my sweaters get too wrinkled when I fold them.  I'm not the best at it, but yes, I do fold carefully!  I find that I do better if I hang them on padded hangers.  I'd rather have the occasional shoulder bump than deal with all the wrinkles.  This isn't such a problem with heavier weight sweaters.

Hmmm.  I don't wear sweaters much because I get too warm in them.  I am wondering, though - could you be stacking them up too high?  Or maybe you could use those dividers that keep the folded sweaters really straight, or the hanging bags with built-in shelves for a few sweaters in each cubby.

I know it wouldn't work for me to put them on hangers, but if it works for you, why worry? :)

I now fold them the same way they arrive to me when I order.

I lay the sweater face down.

I fold the sleeve across the back at the angle of the "hinge" (where the seam says to fold if you know what I mean).

Then I fold the sleeve (kind of half way ... where the elbow might be?) up so the cuff comes up near the shoulder.  Then the other sleeve.

Then I fold the sides of the sweater inwards so they meet halfway.

Last, I fold the bottom up to the top, turn the sweater over, and have something like a rectangle to store in the drawer.

Wow! Coug, I need to take a page from your book.  I like it!I can see myself trying your method and after the fourth sweater, I'm folding the old way, again.

But, sweaters that are medium quality, I placed them in those vacuum pack plastic for storage and suck the air out of it. For the more expensive ones, I still place them in the vacuum pack plastic but I don't suck the air out.

Thanks for the instructions, Cougar! I'm trying to picture this.  It doesn't get too bulky from the sleeves being folded up?
Sometimes I lay the sweater face down. Cross the sleeves across the back. Then fold the bottom hem up to the top.  That makes for a large area though.

I used to just cross the sleeves in the back but I think it makes more bulk in the middle.
I even tried folding the sleeves horizontally across the back but it made a huge shoulder section.

Then I saw how they arrived when shipped and stayed with that.  after a while, it becomes a habit.

And ... no matter the quality, I store them that way (now) in the vacuum bags and go ahead and suck out the air.  I just got them all out for fall/winter.  They were a little crinkled at first but later I saw they they all looked normal again.

I used to fold my sweaters, but now I roll them up the same way I would if they were going into a suitcase.

I do fold them in half lengthwise, with the shoulder seamings together. Then lay them flat, bringing the arms together pressing them across the front of the sweater. I smooth the front flat, then flip and smooth the back flat. Then roll it up from hem to collar. No wrinkles, even when stacked on my closet shelves.

I never would have thought of rolling them, but it makes perfect sense.  No permanent creases along fold lines!

I've been doing the rolling thing in suitcases for some time, and more recently in drawers for t-shirts, jeans, workout pants, sweaters. Makes great use of drawer space and look-ma-no wrinkles!!

The obvious response to that, then, is how do I roll up my face at night?

I like the rolling idea. Never heard of it so never tried except for packing a carryon.

Couple of questions:

1. How do you store sweaters that have fake fur collars? I have one that I love and I don't want to crease the collar.

2. Is there a way to eliminate the dreaded hanger bulge from sweaters than have been hanging? I have a couple like this. I hung them up to air out and forgot them over the summer. :(

I have tried this method, which work works well on fine to medium weight knits. BTW, on a heavy knit, hanging causes the sweater/sweatercoat to stretch out of shape (gravity at work). If your fur collared sweater is too heavy to hang, can you remove the collar to store the sweater and reattach it for wearing?

These "bump be gone" hangers are great! You can find knockoffs at K-Mart:
