With the coming holidays, there are so many glitters being added to beauty products. I was at Walgreen's last week and run into Wet N'Wild Holiday Collections. I found the 24 Carat Glitter Nail Polish. It was pretty and shiny so I had to buy. But, the glitters are not round. The glitters are teeny strips and they're gold with some bronze/red mixed in. I don't like it by itself. But, I put on top of the pink color on my two ring fingers and I love it! The pink shows thru and gold strips is the accent. Lovely! But, I only put on one coat. I think two would cover the pink color. Anyone else liking the glitter for the holidays?

I haven't tried it yet but I wouldn't put it past me. The metallics are still catching my eye. I did read where if the glitter is a chunky kind, you want plenty of clear top coats to try and help it be smooth.

Yes, I heard that, too. The WnW 24 Carat is not chunky at all. I didn't top on a top coat because it didn't need it. But, maybe because I only put on one coat.

I tested it on two fingers only because I'm not sure how bothersome it would be to take off.

I've seen a ton of fun glittery polishes! Although I haven't worn polish at all since forever, sometimes I'm really tempted to try when I see fun colors. I'm afraid of how polish would look on the nails of my not-perfectly smooth hands though. My feet are better left as they are, and they get me where I want to go LOL! I also worry about the toxicity of the polishes and removers as whenever I go by our local mani-pedi place(which gets good reviews locally)the fumes right outside just about knock me over. I've never ventured in LOL!

cara4art - While I understand your concern about the potential toxicity of nail polish and the accompanying products, it sounds like a fun little pick-me-up for you would be to try one of the glittery polishes for the holidays. I know that there are a number of products out there that are much safer than the old formulations and, if they don't last as long (something I've read), who cares? It's just for fun for a day and a night or a party or something.

While nail polish is no longer dirt cheap either - I remember shuddering at $8/bottle but now I've seen it above $20/bottle - I think that for a brief bit of fun you might be able to find something reasonably priced. Maybe something for a holiday stocking if you do those.

Speaking of the holidays, I've finally gotten smart this year. I am providing my DH with a list, including links, of exactly the things I would like him to consider. Nail polish just got added to my mental list and tomorrow I'll be digging through to pick just the right color for me. It's been over a year since I've applied it so that will be a sweet treat.

Anyway, I'm not trying to tell you what to do and I know that you keep a close eye on your beauty expenditures - as do so many of us. Some polish just sounds like something you might have fun with on a short-term basis.

Wow - $8 for nail polish - that's high! never mind a whole $20. I'm going to have to pass unless the polish is well under $8. Likely the WnW is, plus I've seen packets sometimes of several colors in tiny bottles for likely not very much. I haven't even checked prices I've been so out of the loop about this for decades now LOL!
No stocking stuffers for me, or gifts - we don't do Christmas around here. We keep things very simple which works for us but likely not for lots of other people. Too long a story to go into here, with the way we live LOL!

Cara, I agree that $8 is a lot. But I found a gorgeous color today that was half that. I was at Walgreen's and Revlon had a pretty shimmery blue, Not So Blueberry, that was $4.79 before the cosmetics clerk threw in a $1.00 manufacturer's coupon. With tax it was about $4.

DH is going to hate the color as it's my first venture into something not pink, peach, or red. But I want to try something different and fun and he loves me so he'll have to love me with blue nails.

Can't remember if I mentioned it earlier or not and too lazy to look, but I know I've seen lots of inexpensive nail polish in a variety of colors. The big issue will be finding a color that you like in a formulation that you can be comfortable wearing. Secondary, IMHO, is that the less expensive colors don't always last very long but if you're interested in something just for fun, does an application have to last a whole week? I'd go crazy if I applied lipstick once a week (I kind of like to see my natural lip color sometimes), but of course lipstick is easier to apply too.

Anyway, just trying to think of something fun to try since you mentioned you might be interested. I'd say skip a Starbuck's latte and splurge on nail polish instead but something tells me you don't regularly drop $4-5 on a cup of coffee, right?

I never did when I lived in the city, preferring to splurge on things that lasted a little longer and didn't prompt numerous visits to the ladies room.

Pure Ice and Sinful Colors are two inexpensive brands. I know there are others, besides Milani, Rimmel, and WetnWild.

I don't even drink coffee at HOME, let alone drop that $4-5 on a Starbuck's latte and I don't even drink milk either LOL! This is why I take some financial advice with a huge grain of salt, you know, "the latte factor" etc. Thinking I'll continue to pass on nail polish - I've gone this far in life without it and no one has complained, plus it's more STUFF in my life that I don't need really. Plus one has to inhale fumes from that dreadful nail polish remover when it comes time to do the nails again - ugh! I'll just admire it on other people.

I agree that a lot of financial advice is YMMV. If someone doesn't drink coffee or they don't use cable, it's hard to cut back on those items.

Passing on nail polish - well, if that makes you happy then that's what you should do. I agree, don't clutter life with things that won't bring you pleasure.

On the other hand, as I remind my DH a lot, "If not now, when?" As long as you're finding people, places, things, and events that contribute to a fulfilled life, great. When my time comes I want to be able to say the same thing my father did, "I had a great life." I thought he was a remarkable man but he wasn't rich and powerful or anything. He worked hard, he played hard, and he was good to other people. He wasn't afraid to take risks after weighing matters carefully and sometimes he was known to be impulsive. While a couple of impulses didn't end so well, many had wonderful, unexpected outcomes.

On the other hand, DH is a workaholic with huge stress issues. When I suggest a day of rest on the weekend he looks at me like I've lost my everloving mind. "But, there's so much to be done." I think that might be his epitaph.

I'm not pushing you about anything, cara, and I'm sure no one else is either. Just be happy. And I'll try to remember to take a pic when I do my crazy nails so you can "admire" (I use the term loosely) them.

I just did my nails in a denim blue with a silver sparkly top coat from Essie. I'm almost 56 and I don't give a hoot what people think. I'm having fun with my nails.

When my kids were young I didn't care how long or short or what color their hair, how weird their attire - pretty much anything went if it was legal and didn't leave any permanent marks or scars. They could express themselves as they wanted so long as they didn't get kicked out of school.

Well, now that I'm old enough I think I can express myself the way that I want to as well. Thanks for the reinforcement, BB!

You were one of those moms who knew that it was only hair, even when it was long, pink, mohawked, or all three at once. Well, these are only fingernails, even if they do glitter. We have all earned this.

We should declare a glittery nails day and all paint our nails with sparkles!

I haven't yet done any polish, but last night when I was in a CVS(don't tell DH, as he won't even step in that store as it's non-union) a couple of store workers were putting out a new display of inexpensive polishes that had no toluene or other nasties in there. Nice range of colors too. Since nail polishes of so many colors are popular now, it seems that more companies would get on the bandwagon of non-toxic ones. Some are though, although in some lines the color selection is very safe and anemic-looking. I did see some small bottles of Wet 'n Wild glitter polish that looked like the flecks were small. Still on the fence about painting my nails though, even though the colors and all look tempting!

Here is a pretty glitter nail option I noticed on Pinterest but the original source is Steffels (http://steffels.blogspot.com/2011/09/some-red-spam.html).

As shown here, it's a coat of glitter polish sandwiched between two coats of red, but I think it would be lovely with other colors, too (thinking of dark green). Kind of a submerged effect.....

That is an interesting look and I am not a fan of glitter. I might make an exception for special occasions but I prefer shades I know I am going to get at least half way down the bottle. Which reminds me I ''splurged'' on 2 polishes today (actually I got a nice 35 dollar gc from niece for my bd) at ULTA. Nice and quiet in the store so I was able to shop in peace. I got L'oreal Ravens Strength, a shimmery charcoal gray and Zoya Yasmeen; shimmery dark purple.

Below is a pic of Raven Strength but those are not my nails but off a blog. I could take it down if that is a problem. I just wanted to show.

update: Yasmeen is chipping on me already (barely into the 2 nd day).

No thanks, about nail designs - even if I went ahead and did my nails, they would be solid color, like what I wear. But it's very doubtful that I will! Again, I don't want MORE beauty products in my medicine cabinet, or have to deal with polish removal etc. Plus I don't like the look of "nail designs" anyway - tacky! I prefer to use my artistic skills for other things.
Another consideration, my hands periodically have eczema, marring their appearance, so nail polish wouldn't be a particularly good look with this. Ever since I was exposed to one cleaning job my hands, right hand in particular, acts up from time to time, but safe to say that my hands usually look a bit rough, no matter what I put on them, so I tend not to bother with hand creams and the like. Plus hands are always in and out of something anyway.

IMHO, I don't think that nail designs are tacky as long as they are not too ostentatious. I love how people come up with designs on their tiny finger nails that tell a story. I think it's fantastic! I'm not creative enough. I'm strictly whatever color comes out of the bottle. So, green with glitters underneath with the ring finger maybe with a different color and glitter. That's the extend of my creativeness.

If I were going to do a glitter nail polish look, I would go with this gorgeous set from nails inc. It's called The Wyndham Collection. There is a teal black base coat and a holographic overglaze. Beautiful!
