Scarves
« on: December 06, 2011, 10:34:59 PM »
I love scarves. They do so much. Add a splash of color. Hide a multitude of sins. Bring attention to face or hair or waist, depending upon how worn. I don't think it matters the fashion trends of the future; I don't see myself ever not using scarves, at least sometimes.

Listy's idea about tying a red one to a black patent retro bag is what sparked my thoughts.

Do you see scarves drifting out of your style as they inevitably will do on the fashion pages?

I have not used scarves my whole life until the past 2 years. Everyone else seemed to wear them well but I thought I looked hideous in them.  Why? Anyway, I really enjoy using them now and do like to add them in.

I love scarves as well. A lot of times when I go to wear one though, I end up removing it.  I really like how they look on everyone else, so I keep trying.  And I keep buying when I see a color(s) that I like at a good price.  But, they have to be just the right width and fabric.  I don't like when they're too bulky - I have to consider my height.
I'm still searching for a perfect blue scarf.   :rudof:

Come to think of it, I don't have a perfect blue scarf yet either. I will know the shade when I see it. So many tend toward aquamarine or steel blue and I want a true blue that reflects the blue in my blue-gray eyes so that they pop a little.

I'll go along with difficulty finding affordable, lightweight scarves for warmer weather. I'm also not very skilled yet at wearing them loosely. I need to look up one of those sites that illustrates 101 ways to wear a scarf.

In the winter, since we heat our home with a wood stove, we can have chilly spots, especially if I forget to throw a log on. Any scarf feels good about then.

And in our cold climate, if I'm not already wearing a scarf as part of my outfit,  I mix and match them with whatever coat I've chosen for that day's weather and, again, warm is good.

I don't see scarves themselves going out of style ever - it's how one wears them, and what type, that makes for a stylish look or not. Personally I love scarves, mostly the oblong ones that I can use as a hip wrap(if the fabric is on the thin side)or looped around the neck European-style for warmth with style. I don't usually go for the square ones myself. The second-hand stores have been good to me around here - I've picked up a number of great scarves for just $2-3 each. At that price I can indulge LOL!

I'd say you can indulge and such a worthwhile indulgence. I can't count the number of times I've seen a woman whose outfit turned my head and, after careful thought, I realized it was a scarf that pulled it all together and made the difference between OK and eye-catching in an attractive way.

I have a question for all scarf lovers: How do you store them? I have lots that languish in a box as I can't find a way to display/hang them that isn't in the way. In my closet they just get lost due to poor lighting and a small closet so things tend to get crammed in. Do we have any creative solutions to storing/displaying them?

I think scarves look wonderful on other people, but I have not yet found the confidence to try them.  Add in my tendency to be overly warm, and it's a recipe for disaster.  My mother has been pulling out scarves she kept from the 60's and they do look nice on her.

I am wondering, now that I think of it, if scarves look best on people with shorter hair or those wearing their hair up, at least.

Most of mine are draped over a hanger, like you would a pair of slacks - in my closet.

I LOVE scarves and have kept every one I've ever had since the mid-60's. The ones in current rotation are the longer, larger ones. I store those by folding them into rectangular shapes and clipping them to skirt/pant hangers, then hanging them (arranged by color) in a section of the closet. The older scarves are folded and stored in a closet drawer, and I rarely wear them because they are out-of-sight-out-of-mind.

Oh, I forgot. I got rid of "regular hangers. So hangers with lots of add-on clips would work.

How about hangers with clothes pins? That's how I hang my bras up to dry.

You can get sets of plastic clips that go on regular hangers.  They would work for your scarves, I'm sure.
