Favorite Body Lotions
« on: December 15, 2011, 01:46:37 AM »
I am in the market for a new body lotion to use at night, so no sunscreen needed.  I shower at night, so this would be used immediately after.  Of course, this time of year I need one that is fairly rich.  I don't mind scents at all.

I know we have discussed these in the past, so if your fave hasn't changed please just mention it again, okay? :-*

I've been meaning to try BOOTS Body Butters, particularly the Brazil Nut Body Butter. I heard it's really nice.

http://www.target.com/p/BOOTS-Extracts-Brazil-Nut-Body-Butter-6-7-fl-oz/-/A-13626065

They have several scents, of course.  I hate that they don't have samples out but for that price ($10) for a 6.7 oz, I guess, it's not bad.  So, I may breakdown and buy it.  :P

As for favorites, I don't I have any. I still have some from Body Works and Bath and Body.  I think that's why I haven't purchased BOOTS body butter.

I have been using Cocoanut oil & E cream that I got from the Vermont Country Store.  Can't find it there now, or I'd link it for you.  I read a lot of great reviews about Cocoanut oil so I tried it and we love it.  Yep, DH asked to take it on a business trip to Ohio so its not here right now.  Its a solid at room temperature, but melts easily on the skin and is absorbed in about 10 minutes.

I'm sure we shall be keeping it around from now on.  Been thinking that people used oils long before creams were invented even though it sounds strange to modern ears.

I'm with Poppyfields with the coconut oil. Pretty much all I use on my body for the last few years is just straight extra-virgin coconut oil that I get out of the wet bulk area at my natural foods co-op. No lotion even tempts me now, or artificial cream for that matter. If I'm feeling like a treat, I will apply my own mixture of shea butter and coconut oil that I make myself. I have it in a couple of jars. My husband uses this exclusively, after he found none of the commercial, or even natural foods store lotions did anything for his dry itchy skin. My concoction really helped him, and a couple of friends of ours. At one time, I was briefly considering starting a small-scale production of this but decided it would be too much work, plus I lack the personality for marketing and getting out there with it, so I just make it for personal use.

My hands-down favorite (HG) body lotion is Kiehl's Creme de Corps body lotion. I've repurchased it over and over for many years.

I have dry skin on limbs (legs, expecially), especially in cold weather, and this lotion keeps them soft and smooth. I apply it after showering when my skin is slightly damp. It is so effective, you can even skip a day without loss of effect. Earlier this year, I was away from home for a month and did not have any Creme de Corps with me. By the time I returned home, the skin on my lower legs had become dry and scaly   but this was reversed in short order when I was able to resume using the CdC.

It is a bit on the pricey side, at least for me, and I've tried several other creams/lotions from time to time, looking for something that works as well at a lower price, but haven't found it.

I love to have this topic revisited, with the winter weather upon us.

Christinedenice, I also like the Kiehl's Creme de Corps, but find Cetaphil creme to be just as effective at a better price. That's my staple for body moisturizing.

I just picked up a new Cetaphil product -- Restoraderm lotion. No preservatives, unscented. Very light and seems super moisturizing. Anyone else tried this or the cleanser in the Cetaphil Restoraderm line?

One from the drug store that I have not tried yet is Gold Bond Ultimate Restoring Skin Therapy Lotion, CoQ10.  Has anyone tried it?

Linc2, thanks for the tip on the Cetaphil creme. I will put this on the list to try when I run out of Kiehl's. I do love the regular Cetaphil cleanser and have used it for a long time...didn't know about the Restoraderm line, but will look for it.

I still like Aveeno, but recently I bought something called Bio-oil. I had seen the adverts in magazines and my South African colleagues always raved about it , so I was curious.I quite like it, it is very moisturising and it has a delicate scent but, despite the claims that it is very easily absorbed,Aveeno is better and I will probably go back to it once I have finished this bottle.

I recently tried a new lotion by an organic company called Out of Africa. The product I have is a lavender shea butter hand lotion(I was looking for a replacement for L'Occitane hand cream, which is expensive for me) but I know they also have body products. It smells wonderful,is really moisturizing and has 10% shea butter. The price is also reasonable.I got mine at drugstore.com.

Shea butter is good stuff!  I'll have to check this one out next time I am plotting a drugstore.com order.   I always have lots of lotion around in the winter.

I'm back on this topic to report what I have been using.  For day, I have Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen SPF 15.  It has the usual Aveeno oat kernel flour and a fairly short list of other ingredients.  Verdict: I like it - feels good, sinks in quickly, is non-greasy, and has no fragrance.  (I am not sensitive to chemical sunscreens.)

I can't say definitely that I would not try anything else next - in fact, I probably will.  I have promised myself to use daily lotions with sunscreen from now on, however!

For night, I am trying Gold Bond Ultimate Restoring Lotion with CoQ10.  It is supposed to be for depleted, dull skin, with vitamins A, C, and E, anti-oxidants, ceramides, and lipids.  Verdict: I love this!  It has a very light, fresh scent that I enjoy,  makes my skin feel very soft and soothed, and the feeling lasts until the next morning.  I think this is a keeper!

Has anyone else found new favorite body lotions?  Are body butters worth the trouble, for instance?

My order for Cetaphil's Restoraderm Skin Restoring Moisturizer arrived today and since I've been itching like crazy for practically forever I grabbed it and put some on.

Hours later and nary a twitch where I applied it! This stuff works and it works very well.

I've tried all kinds of creams and lotions, even cortisone cream, in an attempt to stop the itch and nothing has worked for more than a few minutes.

I decided to go all out when I ordered so I also got their Skin Restoring Body Wash, figuring that my whole parched torso could benefit so I'm looking forward to trying that out tomorrow.

So far this stuff is the bomb!

I do have to make one correction - Vanicream worked for more than a few minutes but not as immediately and it was much harder to apply. This is more lotion-y than cream-y. I think this has lasted longer too.

I just purchased ADerma products in the hopes that these will help my eczema in addition to the hydrocortisone I use for flare ups.  Just tried the body lotion yesterday and today and it's wonderful.  I got a few other of their products as well.  Heard about these products from eczema sufferers on MUA.  Here's a link:

SueP. - Good luck - I hope these continue to work for you!

Styyna - That's the trouble with thick creams and body butters.  They're okay on small areas, but I get impatient trying to use them all over.  Elbows, knees, maybe hands or feet - after that I want a lotion!

Wonderful! I just ordered Cetaphil Restoraderm wash & lotion on Ebay for DH.

He itches after shower. We have our cwntral heating on, as it is very cold here right now. Extreme sub-zero tempatures + central heating = very dry air, thus skin problems.

So happy I found the answer here, once again!

Styyna,

It sounds like you have that "atopic" skin that Restoraderm lotion was meant for. Whatever that is!

If anyone tries the Restoraderm body/face wash, will be interested to hear how you like it.

I'm not at all discerning when it comes to body lotion. I use everything I'm given and usually like it. The ones I'm using at the moment are:

(a) A locally made organic body lotion from "Skin Things" with a desert lime and wattle seed scent. It makes a change from florals and doesn't smell foody. Love it.

(b) Bobbi Brown's "Beach" body lotion, which fits in with it being summer here.

(c) Paula's Choice Weightless Body Treatment. This is a staple. I use it every other day on chest and arms, and slap it on more liberally at the weekend. It isn't noticeably hydrating but I use it to keep blemishes and bumps in check.

I do not use body lotion myself (lazy me!) but hubby itches after shower, even though his skin looks perfect. Oddly enough, his skin is better whenever we are abroad - so, it must be something in our water (chlorine) or the dry, dry air. He was just saying he needs something more effective / more moisturizing, and ta-da! Here you guys gave me a tried and tested recommendation. Great!

I will be happy to let you know how he likes it.

I was very pleased to find the recommendation here, and it is fragrance-free, too! Also I think the packaging is so neutral he won´t have to be embarrassed to use them at the swimming pool and at the gym.

Update: I finished my first bottle of Gold Bond Ultimate Restoring Lotion with CoQ10 and immediately started on a second one!  I rarely do this with body lotions - there are so many to try - but I am quite happy with this one.  Light, fresh fragrance, sinks in quickly, moisturizes for a long time but is not greasy.  I can't think of a single downside to it.

Hubby likes the Cetaphil's Restoraderm Skin Restoring Moisturizer a lot. It really helps! He is VERY happy!! I will most certainly order more. (Why didn´t I buy this in the USA? What was I thinking? I WAS in and out of shops all the time.)

I tried it on my arms, too, and was surprised at how fast it was absorbed. It did not feel greasy or unpleasant afterwards, either. My skin felt very supple.

Oddly enough, the Restoraderm Body Wash makes him itch more.  :o He stopped using it and gave it to me, I may as well try it as I have no probs with itching. Ok my legs are horribly dry in winter, and they sometimes itch. Did I mention I am very lazy, do not use body lotion, and hate "pampering"?
