eyelash curlers
« on: January 22, 2012, 06:05:33 PM »
I have always been deeply suspicious of these contraptions, which look like medieval instruments of torture to me... but my daughter was given one for Christmas and she left it in our bathroom, unused, so I thought I'd give it a try. It is not difficult to use and, no, my eye did not pop out, but I don't think it makes a  difference... Anyone care to educate me on the secrets of eyelash curling?

Sure.  I've been using eyelash curlers for years, so I'll tell you what I know about them.  They do make a difference for me, anyway.

Use the curler before putting on mascara.  If you use it after, your lashes may stick to it and you could pull out a whole section.  I knew a lady who did this once and they took forever to grow back.

A curler that is the right shape for your eye should not pinch, but squeeze gently until you can tell you don't have any skin caught in it.  Press down firmly and hold for a few seconds.  Then carefully "walk" the curler up your lashes, pressing down and holding a couple more times.  This should give you a natural and graceful curl.

That's it!  Occasionally clean your curler with alcohol on a cotton pad.  Replace the pad when you can tell it doesn't work as well - six months or so.

I use mine every day.

I have used an eyelash curler (Revlon) almost daily since the early 1970's.  My lashes are long, and they would hit the inside of my glasses, driving me crazy.  In college, after getting contacts, I loved how it and mascara gave me that lush, false eyelash look.  Curled lashes also help to set back my hooded lids.

The only thing I would add to Listy's instructions is after getting it settled into the proper position, I gently squeeze for 10 seconds before 'walking' it up my lashes as she says.  Then comes the mascara.

Apropos of nothing, are your eyes really cold, dark blue, Poppy?

Cannot add anything to Makinalist´s advice, really.

But, Milla, you´ve never used eyelash curler?  :o

I´ve curled my lashes ever since my teens. Even if I wear nothing on my face, I will always curl my lashes. It opens up my (heavy, hooded) eyes. I really like the look. Makes more of my lashes, too.

I sometimes curled my lashes after having applied mascara, too...BIG mistake. Take it from me, you do not want to try it.

Nowadays, I seem to have problems with skin hgetting trapped into the torture instrument - Imean, lash curler, and it can really hurt. I guess I should try different makes to find one that doesn´t do that. Or, just possibly, the skin around my eyes is looser than it used to be.

I use mine every day.  I also have the heated one by Sephora, which I use only occasionally when I notice it in my make up drawer.  :D

I use my almost everyday. On the weekend, I give my lashes a break but I do love my curler.  I have Shu and also the one from E.L.F.  The E.L.F. works just a good as Shu.  I look more awake and at 4:00 in the morning, I need all the help I can get to me look awake.

No, I'm lying.   :tongue2:

Eyes are fascinating.  Most are so complex and hard to describe their color and beauty.
When I say 'cold' I mean there is no warm color in them.  I used to describe them as navy.  Up close, they are deep grayed blue (steely blue) with white 'rods' radiating out from the pupil to the edge.  Just around the pupil I have a cool taupe star burst.  You can only see it up close.  From afar they look quite dark.

And they look best with curled lashes.....ahem.....getting back on topic.

Thanks for the advice. Now that I've lost the fear of using eyelash curlers, I  use them every day! I though you  had to hold your lashes  for about a minute, and I did not know that you had to move them up your lashes. It is a lot less complicated than I thought. I heard that the Shu Uemura ones are the best; why is that?Don't they all do the same? I have also watch a clip on Youtube about curling your lashes with a spoon.

Wow -- that's amazing. You can't get the Shu in the states anymore (unless that has changed). I had no idea that the E.F.F was as good. Thanks for the tip. .

I'm curious about the eyelash curlers that others like and if anyone considers theirs to be HG status.

It's one of EmilyNoel's favorite. I think it's the only one she uses. I can see why. It's cheap and works really good. Shu doesn't pinch. E.L.F. will if you push it to far in. But, IMO, it goes toe to toe with Shu.  For the price you can't beat it.  I've given a few out for Christmas in cute makeup packages to friends and family and I've been told that they really like the curler.

I don't use one - I tried it a long time ago, and it really didn't seem to make all the difference that people say it does. Nor do I use mascara - it makes my eyelashes look WORSE. Eyeliner pencil is as far as I'll go right around the eye, and I've refused curling and mascara when having a makeover too. About all one can say about my eyelashes is that they're dark, and neither short nor long, curly nor straight. They're not real thick though.

I don't use an eyelash curler, but as long as the Shu has been mentioned, I thought I would mention a special they are having for a "mini" curler (who knew there was such a thing?!)  I am posting a link to the thread where I am posting a link about this, so that I don't put any specials where they don't belong on the forum.  :)  I hope this is OK.

Re - pinching - I think different eyelash curlers will work for different eye shapes. Also, my eyes are deep-set.

I have Shu Uemura and they are great, I also have Shiseiso (or Kanebo? Need to check!) and in my youth, I just used whatever was available.

Cara, if your lashes are curly, you do not NEED the curlers...I am envious, yes.

I am currently using a Sonia Kashuk curler that was limited-edition.  It looks like a knock-off of the Chanel with the graphite color.  I used the Shu Uemura for several years, but grew tired of their throw-it-away-every-year philosophy.  I did love the results I got, though. :sigh:

I plan to try the one from e.l.f. next -- I have seen so many glowing reviews, and for the price it can be thrown away if it breaks.

No, they're not really curly - they're just past straight - neither one thing nor the other. Not long, not short either. They are dark though. I've gotten this far without a curler, so I'll continue. I don't add another product or step in my routine unless I'm REALLY convinced it makes a difference. Saves time, money and trouble. This is why I read reviews etc. to the max as my beauty budget is low.

I've been using a Tarte curler and had good luck with it. I tried Shu Uemura's and it pinched. But I have heavy hooded lids. For some reason the Tarte curler works without pinching me. I'm assuming the shape is slightly different though I've never compared them.

I've wanted to try the Tarte curler for ages.  I'll get around to it when there is a good sale, I suppose.

I´ve never bought a heated curler, as I think I would not use it often - it would take some time to warm up,wouldn´t it? I cannot wait...too busy, too impatient!

I have noticed ice cold eyelash curler does not do as good a job as a warm one, though. If I am sitting in a sub-zero car (not driving, of course!) and need to use my curler (=every day when I am going to work) I will warm it up in my hands a bit.

At home, a short blast from a hair dryer on the eyelash curler does the trick, too: the curl takes faster and, I think, lasts longer.

OT but I noticed one collegue always had the most lovely curl on her lashes even at the end of the shift, and she told me she used wp mascara - it helped keep the curl all day long!

I agree with you, Anne.  I think that different brands of curlers are shaped differently, so work for different eye shapes.
The heated curler I have is the one from Sephora (their own brand).  I usually forget to use it, and end up using the regular curler.  When I DO remember, I like it though.  It's used after applying mascara, and it doesn't take very long to warm up.  About 30 seconds I think.
Stynna, I have the Tarte curler, but it seems to be the wrong shape for me. I can't get it to "fit". I also have the ELF & Revlon.  Those seem to fit ok.  None are all that easy for me though, because my eye lashes are short.

Oh and beware the dreaded L-shape curl - it looks great if you look at it from the front, not so good from the side!

You get an L-shape if you press strongly at one point only.

And I am speaking from experience.
