Stick/tube/solid foundation recommendations
« on: February 07, 2012, 07:30:51 AM »
Well, lucky me, I'm off to the UK soon. It would help if I organised my passport renewal and booked tickets, but they're mere details!

I'd rather not take liquid foundation. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good stick foundation? I like light and natural coverage and I'm still quite oily-skinned. I've tried some horrible, greasy ones in the past, so would really appreciate some input.

I have Max Factor PanStik but I use it only for strategic extra coverage now and again. It's too heavy for sweeping over my face more generally.

How nice! I hope you have fun.  :)
I have no experience with stick foundations.  It always seemed to me that they would be for those who like heavy coverage.  But, I guess it's all in the application.
If you don't want to bring a liquid, have you considered a pressed powder foundation?

Buy something when you get here! Or just get a mousse-type of foundation. I am not fond of stick foundations, but I remember reading somewhere that Max Factor did a good one-or was it Bobbi Brown? or am I thinking of blushers? make sure you pack some warm clothes because we're supposed to have another 2 weeks of sub-zero temperatures.

That sounds like me on one of my foggy brain days!

I´d think stick foundations are all high-coverage, too.

Actually I used to like Clinique City Base a lot, I think I even finished two of them!! Would Clinique be something you´d consider?

I think Lucy has a good point with the powder foundation, since you are oily-skinned.  As for tubes, there is always the option of a BB Cream.  Also, Tarte has a tube that is good for oily skin.  Now...what was the name of that one...?

We are a foggy bunch today!

Ah - here it is: Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Foundation SPF 15 or Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20.  A nice powder one might be Laura Geller's Balance-N-Brighten.  I think she has a stick one too, which might not be too heavy since it's oil-free.  You could use a damp sponge to apply, but that means something else to pack so maybe not so great.

I´ve used Mac Studio Fix + powder foundation. It gives light coverage, but I like it. I´ve got an oily T-zone.

I am convinced you´ve already considered a BB cream! I think it is a great idea that they offer the smaller 20 ml travel size as well as the big 50 ml full size.

I´ve even seen 10 ml tubes on sale on Ebay, but only Missha PC # 23. Depending on how long you´ll stay in London, you could even manage with, say, 5 Missha sample pouches, although those would not be convenient during travel.

The MAC is another excellent choice.  There are also some good drugstore options these days - Maybelline, Cover Girl, Revlon, L'Oreal -- they all have options that are well-reviewed.

I keep reading where most pros go for Bobbi Brown's stick.  I'd have to agree, and it's flattering under photo lighting. The only folks that it isn't so great for are the super oily gals ... ME.

You are all quite wonderful. Thank you.

As has been pointed out, sadly my oily skin might not get on well with a stick foundation. The pressed powder ones look interesting but I liked the idea (at least) of swiping a stick here and there and blending with my fingers.

@Lucy: Thank you :) I'm going to meet my baby niece. She will be 4 mths old by then - such a gorgeous age.

@Cougar: it looks as if the BB stick isn't for me either, as I too can become an oil slick.

@Anne: I most definitely would consider Clinique for any make-up. They made my favourite blush and lipstick and are still making the blush but the lipstick was discontinued. I still miss it. No, I have NOT considered a BB cream because they seem too hard to try and to get hold of here. However, now that you mention eBay and samples, oh dear.

@Milla: I'll be there in April, by which time I hope it's a little warmer. But I'll be sure to pack some cardies!

@Listy: I shouldn't really have put "tube". It was a superfluous synonym for "stick". But you've actually given me something else to think about, because I could find something not as greasy as a stick but still easier to travel with than liquid foundation.

So much to think about! I've got a gift card and might wander into a department store soon.

I think a powder foundation with a mirror and sponge included would be as easy as any stick, and no messy finger action required!  Good luck with your search, at any rate, and do enjoy your trip.  I know your baby niece will be a pure joy and a treasure to behold.  Have fun playing Auntie LM!

For some reason I don't usually like sponge application, but when travelling I can see the advantage.

Thank you both for your good wishes. I can't wait. Passport renewal today went smoothly - but heavens, the photo is VILE  :barf:

LemonMyrtle, I think every single passport photo nowadays is vile. You cannot smile, you cannot raise your eyebrows - I look like a Neanderthal criminal in mine. I would not allow myself entry to any country based on that photo.

My hubby had to show his passport while shopping in Florida, and the sales assistant looked at his photo, shocked, and commented " You sure look better in real life!"

So, don´t worry. I cannot show my passport to anyone nowadays or I have to kill them afterwards. Your feeling are quite normal.

And, if I usually smile and am vivacious (what a pretentious word though! But cannot think of the right term right now), why cannot I smile in the photo? I do not go around looking positively Neanderthal!

BTW I envy you quite a bit because you get to travel to Britain. I wish I were going, too.

Anne - you are so funny!

LemonMyrtle - I keep suggesting powder forms because I can't think of a stick that is good for oily skin!  Now I am wondering if such a creature actually exists.  Maybe a stick has to be emollient to hold together, if you know what I mean.

@ LemonM.: Oh to be in England now that April's here, blah dee blah (and  I will be 60 if I get there...). It sounds great, bet you can't wait to see the little one.
@Anne: I looked on the Easyjet website to see if there were any flights from Finland to the UK and I did not see any, but I am sure there are other airlines that do a reasonable deal, so you have to come!

Thanks for the reassurance and the giggles, Anne! I showed the photo to three people, hoping for cries of horror. One said, "It just doesn't look like you because you had to take your glasses off." Another said, "It's not too bad. You just look a bit scared." Neither of these was reassuring.

But my darling said, "That looks NOTHING like you. You NEVER look like that. EVER." Phew.

"Vivacious" is a perfectly wonderful word and not at all pretentious. You are free to vivate as often as you please.

Listy: what you say makes sense. I think I should stop lusting after a stick. I'm just not sure I can  It may well be one of those things I eventually add to the "Bin It" thread!

For anyone who's interested (do I hear crickets?!) I've chosen my holiday foundation and it's in a tube.

It's Estee Lauder Double Wear Light. The tube is 4-1/2 inches long and flattish, so will pack easily, and the foundation itself is my complexion's new best friend.

I do like Estee Lauder. EL sales assistants are unfailingly helpful and always give generous samples.

I first tried Revlon New Complexion One-Step Compact Makeup which wasn't bad but didn't quite fit the bill. For my morning make-up routine I definitely like a thinner, liquid foundation as a base. However, the compact works well for a light touch-up during the day so it's living at my workplace.

Becca makes a good stick foundation too.
  • Complexion: Light with pink undertones but tan easily
  • Eyes: green with yellow flecks and a dark grey rim
  • Hair: medium dark brown with lightish highlights, very thick and almost curly
I still haven't found what I'm looking for- U2.

Lemonmyrtle - have you considered a pressed mineral makeup applied with a brush?  Works with oily skin and can be put in your carry on bag - not the little plastic bag - allowing more room for other must haves.
I have used Jane Iredale, Lancome, and my current favorite La Bella Donna.

Thank you, Ammie and Angelcat, for more recommendations. I think I've blown my foundation budget for a while, though. I bought the EL Double Wear Light, the Revlon New Complexion and a new Revlon ColorStay Natural. Oops!

Listy, I ended up getting what you recommended in the first place really! Not a BB cream but something in a tube. I did try a BB cream from The Face Shop and thought it was very ordinary, although it seems to have good reviews. It was Power Perfection. I found it too mask-like.

Susie Q, it's a very thin foundation on, more like a tinted moisturiser but not so moisturising, if you like that sort of thing. I do.

Hello, Mim. I don't think I'm a mineral foundation sort of gal. I say this because even the commercials for mineral foundations do nothing for me and I once tried a Laura Mercier one and HATED it. Admittedly I haven't tried any of your specific recommendations and I just might when I've used more of the zillion of (well, three) foundations I have right now. I can see that it would be an ideal travel foundation for those whom it suits and thank you for your suggestion.
