Is this Fossil bag really that bad? :/
« on: April 17, 2012, 09:57:14 PM »
It's possible that the MUA fashion board doesn't love me (everything I post gets a "nay" there) or that I really truly have bad taste.  I am first to admit that I am no fashionista, but I realized after getting nays for days that maybe I wasn't asking an audience of my true peers, that I LIKE.  If you ladies tell me to run from this, I will.

I am looking for a good bag to use when I go visit my DS on campus, and for when I attend parent sessions at Orientation this summer.  I wanted it big enough to hold stuff (what if I hit the bookstore and buy yet another unnecessary t-shirt or sweatshirt?!), or the countless papers and folders I will get at Orientation, or just schlepping around town all day, or.... And I wanted it to be smunchy when it's not full of stuff, and I like a crossbody option because this mom's old shoulders do get tired from trying to keep a simple shoulder/tote bag on my shoulder all. day. long.

I am leaning to the Russet Brown color -- it looks sorta close to Univ of TX burnt orange.  A color that I love to hate, but it's growing on me.   Also, I am thinking I can get away with using this bag all year round (the price point is more than I usually spend on a handbag-type thing, so I want to justify the price to myself).

Sorry, I don't know how to post the cute little links so here's this big monstrosity of one.  There are different views of the bag along the left side of the bigger pic:

http://www.fossil.com/en_US/shop/women/handbag_collections/explorer/explorer_foldover_tote-zb5258p.html?parent_category_rn=331133&departmentCategoryId=331097&N=0&Ns=p_wsc3%7C0%7C%7Cp_weight%7C0&pn=c&cm_vc=335749&rec=2&imagePath=ZB5258932

ETA:  Forgot to mention that I am on the petite side -- 5' 2" and not skinny.  Hoping this won't look too big for me.

I love that bag and think it looks like it would fit your needs very well. I like how it folds down and I do think you could get a lot of use out of it year round. I don't think it will look to big for you as long as you can adjust the strap to fit.

I like it, too, and Fossil leather is always lovely.  My only concern is the length of the strap when you use it.  Do you have a bag you could measure to compare where this one would hang on you?  The picture makes it look a little long, at least to me.  If it is, then I don't know how comfortable it would be for you.  Otherwise, I think it is a great bag.

One thing I would do is figure the measure of space you think you will need.  Are you taking a laptop, for instance?  If not, your options for shape are wide open.

I have always had good luck with the ebags site when I needed something in particular.  They have sales pretty often, too.  Their site was where I first found my all-time favorite brand for everything: Ameribags.

Finally, you may want to consider whether you want to spend a lot on a bag this large if that is not your usual preference.  You can find lots of nice ones in materials other than leather, and you could still treat yourself to a really nice, smaller leather one.  You might even want to take both on your trips.

In the meantime, I wouldn't put much stock in what that Fashion Board says.  The few times I have looked on there, I thought their suggestions were both wild and wildly expensive.  If you find something that you really like, then it will be the right bag to get.

I agree with Listy.  I like the bag!
I would carry it as a tote......But, I'm about 5'1",  and I think it would look too big on me to wear cross-body like that.  Though I can't really tell without trying it on.

I´ve never realized someone else had to like the bag I like / want!

I wonder what the fashion board would say about my colorful, patterned Harrods totes which are the perfect size for lots of papers, books, a swimming suit.... they´d probably faint! I still love those totes and even take one with me anywhere I travel to!

Anne, you speak-um the truth!  I appreciate that insight!

I rarely buy shoes or bags for myself that are this expensive. So I felt like I needed to "phone my friends".

Planning to buy it thru FatWallet after work. 7% back in my skinny wallet!

That is a great bag! and it must be good quality because Fossil makes very good bags. Personally I don't go for fashion or designers when I buy a bag; it has got to serve its purpose and it must be stylish and that bag fits the bill perfectly. And it is a lovely colour!

A leather handbag will last "forever". If you love it, go for it!  :)

Be sure you get free shipping, too!

ETA:  FatWallet has 5% cash back for Fossil -- it's MrRebates that has the 7%.  I believe in getting all you can get out of a deal!

Thanks for covering my back on that!  I checked them all out and got confoozled. I have never used FatWallet so I was overly excited at the prospect!

Me likey, Marci65!  You have very good taste.  As others have noted, Fossil makes very good quality bags and small leather goods.

Not to clutter up your options or anything, but have you looked at 'Mosey" bags as well?  Their website (the company is in Portland, Ore) has a list of their retailers and I believe you can also purchase directly from the site.  Their bags are hip, eco-chic, full of compartments and super lightweight.  Price-wise, they are more than competitive.

I have two of them, the "Little Gem" and "Roamer".  I just purchased the Roamer a couple of weeks ago and I love it.  They carry much larger bags as well.  I believe all of their bags can be worn cross-body messenger style, or on the shoulder.  At any rate, I'll stop rambling now, since you were asking about Fossil, not Mosey!  I just published some photos and review of the Mosey Roamer today on my blog - here is the link if you want to see what it looks like:

Thanks for mentioning the Mosey brand.  I will keep them in mind for the future!

I just ordered the Fossil bag.  Wow, $20 in tax alone!  I will have to see how much is in my Mr. Rebates account after this purchase clears.  I would love to get a check to help offset this purchase!  :)  I am looking forward to getting the bag and starting to use it.  Now I need to take this excitement and use the energy to weed out my unloved/unused bags so I can donate them.

Ooh. I fell for Roamer.

And I am not even an handbag type! You know, accessories and all that...my shoes are just made for walking....

But Roamer is a lovely color and I really want one.

Marci, I really hope you´ll love your bag. It is such a kind idea to donate some unwanted bags, too! Plus it is a great way of de-cluttering. I wish I could obey the "One item in, one item out" principle.

Une Femme - Great review of a brand I can see I would like to explore!  That's saying a lot, since I am normally faithful to my Ameribags.  Thanks for telling us about them.

Marci65 - I hope you truly enjoy your beautiful new bag.  When it arrives, you'll have to decide where to put everything and practice walking around with it as a tote and as a cross-body bag.  Well, that's what I would do anyway!

Fossil had that new bag on my doorstep in 2 days and shipping was free to boot!

I will have to get brave and take a couple of pix to show you.  It is Univ of TX burnt orange after all; was concerned it would be a reddish brown like the other Russet Brown bags on their site.

Mr. Rebates hasn't sent me any confirmation of the purchase.   :(  But I got one for something I bought days later from another merchant. I hope I don't get skipped over on the Fossil purchase.

Thanks for the help!!

Wow, I love this bag, the color, the hardware, zippers, shape, etc.  Very cool.  I would buy that bag if I were in the market for a new one and wear it proudly.
