Do you like "foodie" fragrances?
« on: November 21, 2009, 10:29:13 PM »
I'm not a huge fan of smelling like food, with a few exceptions. I like Origins ginger scent and I like Jo Malone's Basil Lime Mandarin (smells like Vietnamese Pho IMO.) There are a few citrus scents I also like. I do like some herbal scents, so I guess that's technically a food.

However, I don't care for most of the other fruity or candy "flavored" lotions and potions. I do not want to smell like chocolate, just eat it. I am not a fan of vanilla fragrances, either, although all the surveys say men love this scent on a woman.

I think I do like the 'foodie' fragrances.  I'd probably wear the citrus or vanilla. Also, I really like lots of the Philosophy holiday scents for body wash and lotion. Though, you cannot really smell them on you afterwards.

Also, I like , for this time of year, candles with foodie scents - such as.....gingerbread, cinnamon, pumpkin, cranberry, etc.

Does anyone remember Lemon Up shampoo?

No, I'm not a fan of foodie fragrances, too. I love candles and buy a lot from QVC. This time of year is when they sell a lot of foodie candles and I've yet to purposely buy one. If I happen to buy a set and it had a foodie, it becomes a stocking stuffer.

When I buy lotions, I usually seek the ones made from flowers - wisteria, lavender, ylangylang, sweetpea, violet, etc. No foodie smell. Hmmm...Burt's Bees's volumizing shampoo has pomegranates.  But, I hardly smell it, anymore.  I think that's only thing I have with foodie fragrances at home. But, I could be wrong.

I do like foodie fragrances, especially when I'm around food-- cooking, or at dinners.  I find that florals generally disturb my palate when I'm cooking, eating or tasting wine.  The natural foodie fragrances or true herbals, or scents like Neroli don't seem to clash.  But "natural" is the key for me--actually I HATE most commercial foodie fragrances, because they don't smell like the real thing at all!

Actually, I "cooked up" a body oil with real vanilla beans, cardomom pods, cinnamon sticks that I love around the holidays.  It actually doesn't smell like any of those things, just a natural spice that I find very comforting and relaxing.  And an aromatherapist mixed up an oil blend for a massage that used basil, lemongrass and black pepper essential oils...it was therapeutic and wonderful, so I've tried to replicate that  (but BF does seem to prefer the vanilla oil, or my old fave, Fleur de Chocolat by Fresh, an amazing chocolate/orange fragrance that guys in general, and BF in particular also seem to love. Too bad it's been discontinued...

Oh yeah, ddgattina. I love cooking up "holiday" scent, too.  Hmmm....cinnamon, cloves, orange or lemon rinds, ginger, a few cuttings from our Christmas tree, eucalyptus. Oh, the list goes on. I've never tried body oil. That's a great idea. I usually just add real vanilla and water.  ;D   Ditto on the commercial foodie.

I didn't think I liked foodie scents, until someone from mua scent board told me about Possets (no affiliation). Also on recommendation from the mua-er, besides the sample 5 pack, I ordered a full bottle of Gingerbread ****house. Reading the description, it sounded exactly what I didn't like in a scent:gingerbread, sugar, vanilla, etc. One whiff and I was hooked.
There's also a yummy Gingerbread Crackbouse. Don't be put off by the name.  It's a beautiful, witty, personable online store and forum.
There are many foodie scents at Possets: chocolate, licorice, honey, pepper, but I think the 'Houses' are the most popular.  This summer, though, Fabienne (owner and perfumier) created a trio of scents: Limoncello La Dolce Vita (almonds, vanilla), Limoncello Ti Amo (citrusy) and another Limoncello I haven't tried yet. IMHO, the Limoncello's are her best foodie scents yet. They're sweet, but not cloying, like the 'Houses' but with an edge.
Kinda sounds like I'm unashamedly in love with Possets, eh? ::)

I do like certain variations for gourmand scents especially vanilla, ginger and loukhoum.  With that said, too often this variation of scents are cheaply formulated and are too juvenile.  It takes really a lot of time and patience to find a good one.  It is definitely worth spending a few extra pennies to be sure you do not end up smelling like you just finished baking a cake.

I think Eurodivas has nailed this one for me.  I sometimes like an element of vanilla or ginger in a scent, but I don't want it to dominate.  I have smelled way too many foodie scents that should come in pink Barbie packaging for little girls.  I'm drawn to mysterious, sensual, smoky, womanly scents with amber, sandalwood, patchouli, and/or musk in them.  Rowrrr.

I would have to say I loathe foodie fragrances. By the end of the day I smell like food, anway. And not in a good way, lol.

I have never liked fragrances that smelled like foods.  Even hair products  and lotions. Just a pregnacy thing but I feel nauseated whenever I smell vanilla.  I used to love vanilla candles and lotions but not now.  You won't find one vanilla scented item in our home! I do still use one product that smells like Chocolate ( my Ojon ) but put up with it because I love the product so much and the smell fades.

Ditto. I recently went wild with Aura Cacia essential oils. I bought a ceramic light bulb ring and intent to go nuts this holiday season.

EXACTLY! And well said!  Here is the place I buy my scents (and absolutely no affiliation, except I love them):

http://santafefragrance.com/colognes.shtml

I discovered this perfumer decades ago-- she uses only natural essential oils, and she has an amazing collection (and some oils, like true Mysore Sandalwood actually improve with age, like fine wines).  She is a classically trained perfumer, but does not use ANY synthetics in her own line-- absolutely none. This is extraordinary, because even most "natural" lines end up using some sythetics (some know they are doing this, and some just don't know better, and end up getting sold stuff that has been adulterated.  I have a bunch of SFF fragrances and they are truly on a different plane...just extraordinary and very sensuous.  Ummmmmmm....

I do like a few foodie scents. Not just for perfume but for bath products, candles, etc. I love anything citrus so grapefruit, orange, lime - I gravitate toward all of them however I am not much interested in other fruity scents like strawberry, raspberry, etc. Just like I am not a big fan of vanilla or chocolate scents. In fact, the only "savory" type scent I like is a new development for me; Ginger by Origins. When they first launched the line, I thought it smelled truly awful. Ha. Somehow in the last year or so, I came across it again and now I cannot get enough of it. It is comforting to me so I really like to use it in a long bath and I often use the body balm right before bed. Oh and my daily shampoo and conditioner are both Ginger Up. Strange!
