Like I needed more perfume
« on: December 30, 2009, 06:03:36 PM »
Over the holidays I found another fragrance that I just had to buy. It is Sula's Butterfly Kisses. It is a soft floral that just says feminine. I found the rollerball version on clearance at Anthropologie for $9.95. When this is used up, I am sure I will buy the large bottle.

So now my collection includes:

Lollia's Believe
philosophy's Amazing Grace
Issey Miyake's L'Eau d'Issey
D&G's L'imperatice (#3)
Sula's Butterfly Kisses

I am also pining for Marc Jacob's Body Splashes. They are single-note fragrances in huge 10 oz bottles for dousing after a shower. Scents like lemon, grapefruit, grass, violet, cucumber.... ahhh...
Finally getting to sleep well with dry skin is highly underrated. :)

Isn't it nice to find new perfumes you love?  ;)  I have pretty much stuck to my favorites over the years.  My taste is varied.  I love Cliniques Happy ,yet put just about any Chanel near me and I will love it. Just recently my 16 year old dd started wearing Benefits "Maybe Baby".  I just loved it and "borrowed" some for a few days.  I was thinking that if my dd loves it then maybe it was much too young a scent for me.  It turns out my dh loves this more then any purfume I have worn and he bought me some for Christmas.  My dd said he asked her what it was that I was wearing , wrote down the name and bought it for me.  I thought it was because he knew I liked it but it turns out to be the "snuggle me" perfume of the year.   :P

It IS fun to find new perfumes. I wish there were more days in the year to wear all of them. :)

Congrats on getting your new perfume from your dh. How sneaky and sweet of him! There are a couple of mine that my SO loves and he always makes a point to get me those for bdays or xmas.

I forgot there is one more I have found that I want - Bobbi Brown's Beach. I have no idea how but they have captured the scent of sand. It will be wonderful in Spring and Summer. Actually I will wear it anytime. ha!

I always get Nina Ricci L'Air du Temps for Christmas. This year, my youngest son bought me a few B&BW products in Jasmine Cherry which he says will make me smell like a Japanese shrine maiden (fragrance mist, deep cleansing gel, shower gel, and body lotion).

The fragrance is feminine, sexy and somehow aloof. Good for a mom (or a shrine maiden). :)

I love Beach, and have been wearing it for a while now. I was so glad to have found a perfume that I consistently  liked to wear!  Recently though, I found a second one in Fresh Sugar.  Just got that for Christmas (after printing out the name/picture and leaving out in the kitchen. LOL)

A friend gave me a set of 13 trial-sized perfume oils from the brand Heaven's Alchemy.  Each scent is named after a city.  I started with Dublin, which has a clean, soapy smell.  (I hope I don't smell like Irish Spring!)  Next I think I will go with Alexandria for something more exotic.

I had never heard of the company before, but their packaging is lovely.

Beach was new for me last year. I also love it and highly recommend it, but you might consider also branching out into the more esoteric. That is, I found a couple other beachy fragrances, one that truly captures the barest hint of that old Coppertone smell. The perfumer is called CB I Hate Perfume.

http://www.cbihateperfume.com

The first one is called At the Beach 1966:

Quote
The prime note in this scent is Coppertone 1967 blended with a new accord I created especially for this perfume – North Atlantic. The base of the scent contains a bit of Wet Sand, Seashell, Driftwood and just a hint of Boardwalk. The effect when you wear At The Beach 1966 is as if you've been swimming all day in the ocean.

Another absolute favorite (also beachy) is Mr. Hulot's Holiday:

Quote
The salty breath of the breeze off the Mediterranean, driftwood, rocks covered with seaweed and the smell of old leather suitcases.

I wear all three scents all summer long, sometimes in combination. And I always always always get compliments.

As for new perfume ... at Christmas I learned that my mother's first signature fragrance was Shalimar. I never knew that! Apparently, before she discovered Estee, she wore Shalimar exclusively, and my father bought it for her every year.

Feeling rather nostalgic, I ordered a tiny bottle of the EDP spray and if I love it, I'll get the pure parfum and powder.

I'd love to have something that reminds me of my (still living) mother, even if it was a fragrance from before I was old enough to notice. :D  I never much took to her Estee scent and always felt a bit unpatriotic for washing the scent out of thing she'd borrowed from me.

Thanks, Kelly! I'm going to check out your suggestions - I love Beach.

Also, my mom's perfume was always Shalimar.  I feel like a little kid whenever I smell it. Sadly, she doesn't wear any fragrance now because of allergies

Oh Kelly - I have been dying to try some of I Hate Perfume's stuff. The scent you mentioned (1966) sounds perfect! Ahhhh... Coppertone. Wow. Sometimes when I am in the drugstore I will smell the bottle of Hawaiin Tropic Suntan Oil or Coppertone just to evoke memories of summer and swimming when I was younger. Hmmm... I want some of that perfume. :)

My mom wore Ralph Lauren's Lauren and I have a bottle that I take out maybe twice a year just to really remember her. Nothing like scent to take you back to an earlier life, huh?

Well, you can never have too many scents, I do believe!
I am currently waiting for Possets to start their post-holiday thing which is Build-a-Corset.
(Oh, I know you all are tired of me going on about my beloved Possets, but that site and forum has been to aromatherapy/scented oils what this site has been about everything else to me). We will have choices of Cotton, Chantilly, Ribbons, something intriguingly called Yes, etc and we also have to vote on the holiday scents to see which go into the permanent collection!
So I say enjoy your perfumes and have fun being on a beach or a Japanese shrine maiden!
There are good days and there are bad days and this is one of them.

Well....took a run to Walgreens for meds and whilst looking at the deoderants, found that Dove has some new ones, with different scents and matching body sprays!  Sorry I don't remember all the scents.  I was drawn to one of favorite scents: the cucumber scent deoderant and spray, which I bought, BOGO.  Cucumber cheers me in the winter.
(Anyone remember those little cucumber shaped and scented eye pads that I think Ponds had out a few years ago?  Gues.s they don't make them anymore, but they do make nice cucumber facial wipes with 'scrub' bumps on them.  I buy them when they're on sale. Perfect for someone like me who overdoes it with scrubs.)
There are good days and there are bad days and this is one of them.

When I get to the point that I can prevent myself from buying more perfume when i swear that I won't, I want to live off my samples for a while.  I have gotten so many great freebies with purchases and I never use them because I rarely travel and I keep buying full-size bottles.  So that's a promise I am trying to keep -- to use my samples for an extended period of time so that I get exposed to new options and reduce my sample clutter.

My HG's right now:
*  Kiehl's EDT Musk Oil Spray
*  Keiko Mechieri Loukhoum
*  CK One (for summer)
*  Bvlgari Green Tea (waiting in the wings for next summer)

In my mid-50s and currently on a Jo Malone streak... more about that in a minute.

In my 30s, I wore mainly Lauder's White Linen; then in my 40s, graduated to Dazzling Silver. I still wear both--- WL for casual days, and DS for business meetings (men compliment me all the time when I wear it, no matter what their age). For evening, it's Chanel's Coco (NOT the Mademoiselle, the original one). A couple of years ago, I felt I was in too much of a rut, and began experimenting. I found most of the new scents were either too fruity somehow, or did absolutely nothing on me. Was I resigned to old scents, I wondered? There's something to be said for using what works, but still... somehow it began to feel staid. Bought a bottle of Diorissimo in Paris at Catherine's (a great discounter there) but it's best for summer on me.

I began reading about Jo Malone, and decided to give it a chance. I bought the box of minis. I especially loved Pomengranate Noir and Orange Blossom, also the Nectarine Blossom. Some of the others did nothing for me. Bought Verbenas of Provence (lemons) and then Red Roses. Love RR with PN or VOP. Will buy large size RR when I run out of the small size. With all the mixing, possibilities are endless with JM. I finally feel like perfume is fun again!
A few notes: JM RR goes well with Lauder's WL body creme as a layering base, BTW, probably because WL has bulgarian rose as one of its major elements. May eventually spring for JM RR body lotion, but at $65 a pop it's a little steep.

CB I Hate Perfume sounds so great!! But, I´d love to try them on or sniff them first. That is one shop I will visit for sure if I ever come to New York!

BTW I was so proud when he told the story about reading Tove Jansson´s book November (in his journal, where he tells about creating November the perfume). She was a Finnish author you know.  :)

There have been times, even years when I havben´t worn perfumes at all. Every now and then, I DO buy them, though...   ???

The latest buy (from USA) - O de Lancome. I suddenly remembered I used to love it when I was young. But, it hasn´t got a lot of staying power, and it doesn´t smell like I remembered...maybe my own chemistry has changed?? (I remembered it as a citrus fragrance.)

I used to love Chanel 19, too.

I must confess, I have lots of old = too old fragrances in my drawers. What a shame.  :-[

I used to wear O de Lancome and it was a very lemony fragrance. I loved it but my friends used to call it "O de Pledge" as in Lemon Pledge.

If you like citrus, you may like Hermes Orange Vert. Also, Jo Malone has some lovely citrusy fragrances.

I suddenly remembered I was on a Guerlain spree when I was in my 20´s...L´Heure Bleue, Shalimar, Mitsouko, Chamade, Nahema, Jardins de Bagatelle, later Champs-Elysees......The first two are far too sweet for me now, but I suddenly remember how I used to love the latter ones! I wonder if I still would?  :P

I seem to remember one from the later years I did not buy and regret it, Guerlinade? I haven´t seen it anywhere any more?

I ordered a tiny vial of Jardins de Bagatelle with my CB samples. Oh and also Beach by BB!

I was looking for a perfume by Rochas, I remember using one in my 20´s...but I was not sure any more...could it have been Mystere? That´s discontinued, isn´t it?  :-\

BTW I am remembering more and more perfumes I have bought, used and discarded...EL White Linen, Clinique Happy, Giorgio Beverly Hills (I am hoping this is a false memory!), Red Door by Elizabeth Arden, Paris, .... fickle is my middle name!

Mmmmm! My Jardins de Bagatelle arrived, and I wear it daily. It´s funny how smells awaken memories! One whiff and I am a 20-year old, pretty like young people are, but not so sure of myself. I remembered stuff from my youth I haven´t thought of in ages!

BTW, is there a way of predicting which fragrances one would like, based on fragrances one loves already? You know, type in 5 or 10 of your favorites, and we´ll tell you which new ones to buy?

I'm happy you are enjoying your perfume, Anne.
Here is a web site that has samplers.  Not exactly what you were talking about.  But, for instance, I typed in "beach" in the search, and it came up with this sampler:

Antonia's Flowers Tiempe Passate 1/2 sample
Creed Virgin Island Water
Creed Erolfa
Hermes Eau de Merveilles
Jil Sander Sun
Laura Mercier Almond Coconut
Estee Lauder Azuree Soleil Oil
Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Oil
Estee Lauder Bali Dream
Bobbi Brown Beach

It's 11 samples (1ML vial) for $29.99 (U.S. though, not sure about out of U.S.?).  But, even if not, you can maybe get an idea of what you might like.

Here is another set that seemed interesting (called "Perfume through the Ages):
Hermes Eau d'Hermes - 1951
Estee Lauder Youth Dew Original - 1952
Balenciaga Quadrille Original formula edt - 1952
Caron Poivre parfum 1/2 sample - 1954
Christian Dior Diorissimo edt original - 1956
Givenchy Le De Original Edt - 1957
Givenchy L'Interdit Original edt - 1957
Gres Cabochard Parfum 1/2 sample - 1959

Anyway, here is the link:
http://theperfumedcourt.com/Products/Beach--A-Day-At-the-Beach-Sampler---11-samples__ADAYATTHEBEACHSAMPLER2.aspx
I haven't ordered from them, but coalcracker has.

Hi ILuvLucy,

actually my first order from PerfumedCourt has just arrived!

Today, I got my CB I Hate Perfume sampler!

I am wearing At The Beach 1966 as we speak. LOVE IT!

On the other hand, I received Bobbi Brown Beach yesterday, and I do not like it much - it smells like oriental bazaar / sandalwood to me??

I have yet to try CB Mr Hulot´s Holiday, Eternal Return and Black March, which I received today. Only 1/3 ml samples but plenty to see which ones I love and want more of!

I love Sula's Butterfly Kisses too!  The bottle is adorable and the scent is so much better than you ever expect at that price point.  It isn't a fragrance I would wear in the winter but we just went on a vacation to Mexico and it was perfect for that.  I'm looking forward to pulling it out again when the weather gets balmy.  Some time in June, LOL.

I just ordered Bobbi Brown Beach Body Oil from E**y, and am surfing the Perfumed Court web-site as we speak.

BTW What´s  the deal with Bobbi Brown Beach EDP? (That´s the one I originally wanted, but made do with the body oil.) It isn´t available to Finland in any fragrance shops, BB´s own web shop does not deliver here, neither BB UK. The few I dound on E**y were ridiculously expensive. It is still sold everywhere, right? If it is not discontinued, maybe people just love it so much they won´t sell it?  :)

Oh and I will also order a tiny vial of CB I Hate Perfume On The Beach 1966, I loved it! Needless to say it is not available over here, neither was it sold at Liberty´s at London. I DID buy Mr Hulot´s Holiday over there, though!

There is just the slight problem that I really should not buy ANYTHING as I really have problems paying my bills. I´m a little bit ashamed. Ok, a lot. Ok, I may have problem here.
