My Hall of Fame Eye Cream (heavy cream category)
« on: January 30, 2010, 11:35:29 PM »
I know we had a thread about "favorite" eye treatments, but Hall of Fame nominations are different-- you can only nominate to Hall of Fame status if you have used it for a MINIMUM of 3 years, and repurchased it.  If you found out this product was discontinued, you would buy up all you could find.

To keep some of these products straight, I'd suggest breaking eye creams into at least 3 categories:
Heavy Eye Creams  (thicker formulations, you use these when you want at least a bit of residue)
Light Eye Creams (fully absorbed, no residue; also daytime formulas with SPF)
Eye Serums and Non-cream treatments

My nomination for the Heavy Eye Cream category is a virtual unknown in the US:  Matis Eye and Lip Mask.
It is a thick cream, in a .7 oz tube. Feels a bit tacky on application, absorbs really well, but seems to leave a tiny bit of residue so you still know it is there, hours later.  Doesn't shine, but does provide a dewy, moist look.  For a mask and heavy moisturizing, you apply a good sized amount...for a day cream just tap a tiny dot in.  (With a tiny dot, you won't get residue...if you have applied thickly, as a mask, wait 10 minutes or more --I do this overnight sometimes-- then remove excess by blotting gently with a tissue.
Extremely hydrating for lips and the skin above lips.  Doesn't cause puffiness or  fluid retention (like La Mer does on me), and has never irritated my eye (like many other creams have) or caused milia.

A look at the ingredients is not impressive...but in this case, the formula seems to be much much better than the individual parts would indicate.  I do apply more "active serums" under this, but if I had to choose only one eye product, this would be it.  At $54 for .7 oz, it is relatively cheap, and lasts a long, long time when only used as an eye cream.

I have used this continually for nearly 8 years straight, and I cannot be without it.  I always have at least 2 tubes " in reserve", and if this was ever discontinued, I might fly to Europe to buy up the remaining tubes!
HG, Hall of Fame, top of my list for a desert island.

Nominations are now open for other Hall of Fame eye creams!!!  But please-- no cheating on the minimum of 3 years of use/ repurchase requirements!  (Newer items can get attention elsewhere...let's keep our Hall of Fame a real "Hall of Fame").

Thank you so much for the Matis recommendation and review, this definitely sounds like my kind of eyecream!  What is a good site to order this from?  Thanks.

I just ordered this on "dd"s strong recommendation. At skin-one (on line), it was discounted 10%, free shipping (no minimum) and came in 4-5 days.

It is all that DD said -- a lovely moisturizer for the eye area. Absolutely no stinging, irritation, or puffiness. My eye area really needed something of this quality. So far, I'd say better than the Sisleya (which costs several pay checks).

Really appreciate the recommendation!!

linc2, thanks so much!  skin-one is actually site I was looking at but had never ordered from them or read of anyone ordering from them so I was a little hesitant, I feel better now that I know of your experience with them, I'm off to order!

I forgot to ask you Ladies a very important question before I order, does this have any fragrance?  There isn't any listed in ingredients list on skin-one but sometimes that is not always a guarantee.  TIA.   :)

I don't detect any fragrance--one of the things that I like about it too.

I've purchased from spalook.com too.  If you get on their email list, they sometimes offer crazy good deals (like 20% off...or really good sample packages, of stuff that I actually would use).

I looked in my skincare box in the fridge, and I still have two tubes stowed there, in addition to the one in my purse, and the one in the bathroom.  Whew.

I did not detect any fragrance either. Although the freebie Matis body emulsion that skin-one threw in was very fragranced and I tossed it.

Skin-one did not send me a shipping confirmation that many onlines do, but it came right on time. So, again, my experience with them was good. Like you, loralei, I'd never ordered from them before.

Yeah, they do that french florally fragrance on most of the skincare, EXCEPT for the eye products, which are all unfragranced (thank goodness) and the line for oily/acneprone skin (that one has a very slight, fresh fragrance, which I found unobjectionable, actually nice...but I don't use this line anyway.)

Like linc2, I found the other stuff way too fragranced...ugh.

BTW, I have tried other Matis eye products, and my fave is still the eye & lip mask (as you know).  I used up one jar of Les Yeux Repairing Eye Cream, found it nice but not better than the mask, for my purposes.  It is a more traditional eye cream, rich but disappears with no residual.  It's $74, cheap compared to Sisleya, but expensive compared to the mask, so I doubt I'll buy this again.  I'd rather use other actives under the Mask.

I've also tried the Eye Balm, which is more appropriate for younger women who aren't looking for an intensive eye cream yet.  And in this category , there are so many good choices, don't know that you have to make an effort to find this one.

Hi Ladies, just wanted to let you know that dermstore.com also carries Matis and the Eye and Lip Mask.  Dermstore has free shipping any amount and 10% rebate at mrrebates.com  Also,  I added it to my "Favorites" and put it in cart from there for 10% off but then when I went to checkout, Sales Tax was added which has never happened before, seems they are now charging Sales Tax in NJ and MN as well as CA.  So if you aren't in CA, NJ and MN, it's a good deal.  So I guess I'll just go ahead and order from skin-one for the best price.

DD, I'm curious -- what "active serums" do you use under the Matis eye cream?

I have been using it for a week now -- just as you described, with heavy application at night and light during the day under concealer. I'm really, really impressed!!

Hi again,

I'm so glad you are enjoying the Matis Eye Mask!  I'm sometimes afraid to recommend things, but that is such a HoF/HG item for me, I feel like I should spread the word.  And so far everyone who has tried it ends up recommending it to others, so hopefully there will be enough word of mouth to keep this product in production.

Let's see, I use a bunch of different stuff underneath, mostly because I have it!  In all honesty, it's hard to figure out what is giving benefits sometimes, and I'm on the fence about a couple items, and in "just finish it up" mode for others.  So I've been alternating a bit right now.

The one I would probably continue using is Skinceuticals Phloretin Serum...it is a C serum (with, surprisingly enough, phloretin, another antioxidant). It's non-oily, so the Matis Mask is great over that, but since C serums can be irritating, I only use this when my skin isn't acting up, then I use this in the morning.

I also have some Isomers Pur for Eyes, a soy based serum, so I'm using that up at night.  It's supposed to be firming, but I'm not seeing it.  So just trying to use that up, hoping I'll get some benefit. Sigh.  Can't really recommend that, given the expense. I think that Skinmedica's TNS serum was actually firming, and that could be used all over the face.  I'm on the fence about that one, mostly because of price.  Might go back to that after the Isomers Pur is gone, will have to see. If I only use it around the eye area, it might be cost=justified!

For dark circles, which have plagued me forever, I am using some Teamine Eye Cream--again in use-up mode.  It's a decent , maybe even very good eye cream, but not sure it is worth it, so doubt I'll repurchase.  However I have recently discovered a great, and much cheaper alternative that works as well or better on dark circles--100% Pure's Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream.  It is 100% natural (huge plus) smells totally DIVINE, kind of like a caramel latte, but fresher & better, and it does seem to help with dark circles and any morning puffies. (Smelling it is like an aromatherapy kick.)  A big pump jar (1 oz. I think) is less than $20, and it got really good reviews on MUA. As an eye treatment, that much will last forever! You can find this line in many health food stores.   It won't make the circles go away, but the increased circulation makes the area look brighter and lighter.   As an eye cream it's rather light, so definitely needs to be topped off with the Matis.

So that's it!  I'm not sure any of these is HG like the Matis, but that's what goes underneath, at least right now.

Hope the Matis and the rest of your routine is protecting you both from the winter cold and the indoor heating systems.  I'm going to be back East in a couple weeks, so I'm hoping it will warm up and melt away before then.

Cheers!

Right now, I'm hung up on the new Bobbi Brown Extra Eye Repair Cream.  I hated the old one; it was like trying to shmear heavy Vaseline on my eyes.  But this new formula I love.  And no irritation after wearing it all night.

Thanks so much. It's interesting to learn about some of the "actives" that you've tried underneath. It's tough to sort out what's really working. I've been using Avene's Eluage on the undereye area, so I might continue to use that under the Matis Eye Mask.

I'm amazed at how perfectly my concealer goes on over the Matis. Previously, I could only use DHC Concentrated Eye Cream under concealer, as others either burned or caused my concealer to "melt" or caused my lower eyeliner to drift. This Matis just absolutely stays put, seems to grab the concealer, and smooths over my lines better than anything I've used.

I'm scratching my head whether I have a Hall of Fame item that meets the criteria. You've set the bar high, which is great. Maybe, maybe the LM Secret Brightening Powder. I'm thinking about it.

What a good idea/reminder!  I have some Eluage, used it prior to moving up to diacneal.  But the Eluage might be perfect for eyes under M.

And what concealer are you using?  That is the one makeup product where I don't have a favorite yet, probably because I really need one for dark circles/thin skin.  I've been  on the hunt since I was about 12 years old.

I have very dark, congenital undereye circles, so nothing is perfect. However, having tried most of the "big guns," my current HG is Vichy (Dermablend) Concealer #20. You apply the tiniest pinhead amount, and pat. It's almost gel-like and spreads quickly, does not settle into lines. I set it with two light layers of LM Secret Brightening Powder (#2) and it doesn't budge all day.

Great suggestion...I haven't tried Vichy and I love gel-like consistencies.  I do think they are better about staying smooth and not settling into lines. (My other HG/HoF is Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation, which is also a gel-cream formula).   Does Vichy have foundation with a similar consistency?

And I guess this means that LM's SBP also does not emphasize lines?

I have not tried any of the Vichy foundations -- would love to know also. One nice thing about the Vichy concealer is the price. I believe it's $18 for a tube that will last > a year. Some CVS stores carry it, so you can try and return if you choose the wrong shade. I think Coalie might be using this too?

In my experience, LM's secret brightening powder does not emphasize lines. I am not sure what makes it so special. Maybe that's why it's a "secret"? Oh, I apply the SBP with BB eye shader brush, as it applies such a nice light dusting.

I just bought this and have been using it for about 2 weeks with good results. I can't nominate it for the HoF category though b/c of the time criteria. As far as using something for a long time, I've used Natura Bisse Diamond Extreme Eye cream, I can't say it did spectacularly but it seemed to work, at least I remember being impressed w/the results when I first started using it. I've gotten by for years on gwp tubes that I buy for cheap on eBay, I don't know if I'd EVER pay the $300 or so that it costs for a full sized! I also had been test driving an eye cream I got from Makeup Artists Choice. It seemed to do well but I had only used it sporadically (I'm such an impulse product user!) so I can't say if there was any significant improvement to note!

I think, for me, an eye cream is something I'd notice for not wearing over the years and not something I'd good overnight.  I like the thickness and non-stickiness of the BB as I think it's keeping moisture sealed to the skin.  If something really did remove wrinkles, I think the maker would be swamped for demands ... KWIM?  I'm just hoping that this stuff really does help hold moisture to the skin.

I guess I'll know when I'm 90  :D

I'm really, really liking this Matis e/c, it's rich and moisturizing just what I need, sinks in yet leaves a nice dewy surface (not sticky) for concealer to glide on and my undereye stays fresh (hydrated?) all day.  Worth the price, I got it at skin-one with their current 12% off  code and free shipping.  Also available at dermstore and spalook.    Thanks so much for the rec ddgattina!

Hey, DD,

I want you to know that I'm still a loyal user of the Matis Eye and Lip Mask, on your recommendation over 1 year ago!!

In fact, my daughter, who is 31 and starting to worry about dryness around the eyes, "borrowed" my tube when she was home for Christmas. Of course, she got completely hooked and when she told me she was trying to squeeze out the last drops from that tube with a hammer (?), I sent her my latest full one (just arrived from skin-1) and ordered myself another from skin-1. In the three days between orders, they were sold out, backordered from the company, all that. WHAT???? I finally located another internet company "spalook" (hope they're legit) that seems to have it in stock.

Good stuff, put it on heavy at night, and just a light layer under concealer in the morning.

Perhaps I should be putting a treatment under it at night, but I haven't figured out what.

Thanks for the great recommendation!

Ohhh, I'm so happy, really happy that this worked for you both, loralei and linc2, and for your daughter!!   I'm still using and loving it.  And I've ordered from Spalook several times, they are certainly legit.  If you get on their email list, you'll get lots of 20% off opportunities too.

My latest eye cream add has been to rev up the Matis Eye Mask with a drop of Idebenone liquid that I buy from GoW.  Idebenone is the active in Prevage, a potent anti-oxidant, with studies backing it up, etc.  I liked Prevage, but not as much as the Matis.  Then I saw idebenone on GoWs website and thought "why not get the best of both?"  I can't say what it will do in the long run (antioxidants are preventatives, so we use them and hope...) But a tiny drop mixed into a decant-jar of the Matis is nice and doesn't change any of the good properties I love in the M.   Idebenone is supposed to be used at 1% concentration, so you don't need much at all, and the Matis still acts the way I want it to act.     And Loralei described it perfectly, it leaves a dewy but not oily or sticky surface.  Unique formulation.  Thank you so much for the updates!!!

Anne, that's the one! I just ordered from Spalook, and they notified me that it shipped (so that means it must have been in stock with them). Whereas, Skin-1, my usual source, did not indicate initially that it was backordered, but then notified me later that I had been refunded.

It's definitely got some fans over here, all thanks to DD.

Spalook came through with the Matis eye cream like a charm. Wish I'd figured out that 20% off first order, though.

Once it arrived, I fessed up to DD that I briefly feared that I might have sent her the last tube in the universe. She claims that she would have sent it back to me....adding "so glad I don't have to because this stuff is seriously da bomb."

A British Ebay seller is offering a 2.5 oz Matis Lip and Balm treatment (professional size tube). There´s one left, as I just bought the other one.

Funny: I think the new La Mer Intense Eye Balm is the best in the world (bought it for the first time last Dec in USA) but I still need to try Matis. And, of course, hubby needs something to use, too. I am not leaving my La Mer Intense Eye Balm out where he can use it. So, there is something I won´t share with him!

That Matis eye cream is another item on my bucket list.  It came so highly recommended here and, while a little bit pricy, it isn't up there with the La Mer!  Remember, I usually go with something from Olay, Neutrogena, Paula's Choice, or ShiKai.  The Matis would be a big step up for me.

A bucket list is made up of things you want to do before you "kick the bucket," i.e. die.  They can be funny, romantic, adventurous, educational - anything you want to do "some day."

I first heard the term in a movie by that name starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, directed by Rob Reiner.  It's about two terminally ill men who set out to accomplish everything on their lists.

I have a sort of running bucket list of cosmetic items I mean to try at least once to see if they really are as good as people say they are. That Matis eye cream and Cougar's T. LeClerc loose powder are on it.

Hey!  This would be a good topic, wouldn't it?

Ha! I somehow imagined a huge bucketful of skincare and make-up products before your explanation.

BTW, I can blame you guys for almost all of my make-up + skincare purchases nowadays.  You breed lemmings in your back yard, right?

My Matis Lip & Eye treatment arrived, and it is HUGE. It is not 2.5 oz as promised, but over 3 oz (100 ml). It looks more like a tube of hand cream. It is not blue but a white tube. Difficult to say if it is genuine, hubby is trying it as we speak.  Seller seems to have 100 % positive FB, I´d think some Matis users would know if the products weren´t genuine.

I do not know what the prizes are for your guys over there, but this Ebay seller sells professional sizes of many Matis products.

Just sayin´.

I don't know if this is the real deal, Anne. I buy Matis Eye and Lip Treatment Mask from Spalook and it comes in a 0.68 oz blue tube. That doesn't mean there couldn't be larger packaging, as yours is. Still loving it!

Hi Anne,
Matis does indeed make a professional or spa size, in white packaging.  And if you can find these online they can be a GREAT buy indeed.  I bet this is genuine, because Matis is such a niche line I don't think that anyone would bother faking it, I mean why fake something that almost no one has heard of when you can fake a bigger name, like Chanel or La Mer, haha!

That big tube will last you forever!! What a great find, congratulations...hope you do indeed like it. If not, I'm sure you can find a buyer here (like me!)

This stuff is still my HG/Hall of Fame/ Desert Island eye cream.  In the last year I've also tried Amore Pacific's eye cream (got a generous sample at Neiman Marcus) and no, thanks, I'll stay with my Matis.

I & DH like it a lot! It is *really* moisturizing!

THANK YOU for lifting my mood re - fake or genuine!

Ah - I see the item on the U.S. site.  She ships worldwide but we have to contact her for U.S. shipping costs.  The approximate price would be $77.70 for 75ml, plus shipping.

The tube pictured is blue and 75ml would equal about 2.5 oz.  It would be nice to get the same big white tube that anne got!

When I bought it, the tube pictured was blue, too, and she described it as promised it was 75 ml ( about 2.5 oz). However, I received the white one, with 100 ml (over 3 oz). So, do ask her if she will send you the 100 ml one!

OK, I see it...hey, I bought from this seller before, both the regular packaging and the spa size.  When the spa/ pro size came, I tested mine immediately, and it was indeed genuine.  I have a big tubes still in the fridge from the last time I saw the big size listed...wouldn't want to run out of this stuff, ever.  (Note:  this stuff seems to have a very long shelf life, but I still put back up tubes in the fridge just to make sure.)

Since I pay the full price for this stuff, without question, 'cause it is a great value, finding it on "super sale" is indeed wonderful.
Nice find Ann!  Should last a really long time, even with two people using it.
