Let's Just Chat / Re: The eclipse!

What I remember of the eclipse in 1999 was the changing light at around 1:30pm…it was so strange, like the twilight in the middle of the day. The birds got confused and started singing; it was so strange, like Time had stopped… I agree that we need distractions to keep our minds from dwelling in everything that is sad, scary and quite simply infuriating. I have not read the weekend papers yet, I am saving them for tomorrow morning with a cup of coffee.

I had a morning to myself on Friday ( ‘sandwiched’ between two child-minding sessions) and decided to put the Great Red Lipstick Debate to bed, as far as I am concerned. So I went hunting for a red lipstick that I could wear. This is what I found out:#1 if you try makeup in Space NK everything will suit you, because the lights are designed to make you look good. It is a great confidence booster… but if you are, like me, suspicious of the flattery of mirrors, you won’t part with your money until you look at yourself in the cruel daylight. #2 there is a red lipstick that suits me (there are probably more…) it is by Nars and it is from their Audacious range; it is called Rita! However I can’t see myself wearing it to answer the door to my neighbour or even to go to the shops; I can see myself wearing it in the evening, all dressed up in a black dress and wearing my little diamond studs. This is not me: this is a cliché. To be me, I like something a little less predictable…#3 there are much better ways to use a free morning than going around shops looking at make –up…but if you have spent a day looking after a very active little girl and a baby who is getting bigger by the day, you need it.

We were at 83% here and were able to see a bit of the eclipse before clouds came in at the peak for us. DH went to a lecture about the eclipse put on by a professor from one of the local colleges and received a pair of eclipse glasses there so we knew they were genuine. Even so, I only peeked at the sun through them for the briefest of moments.

I was underwhelmed, to be honest. I expected to feel more awe and wonder than I did. The clouds coming in were heavy and blocked out about as much of the sun as the eclipse so the darkening of the sky didn't feel remarkable. Likewise, the birds retreating to their homes during that time could have been attributed to weather as much as anything.

Still, as Cara said, the eclipse distracted from the daily horror show that is the news. For that I am grateful.

Milla, I saw your picture and my first thought is that you could wear a true red, one that leans neither blue nor orange. Unfortunately, I'm not well enough acquainted with lipstick colors to make a recommendation.

Starting in my teens I could and did wear sheer red lipsticks. I think that starting with an inexpensive sheer red would be the way for you to go if you really wanted to try a red. The intensely pigments reds are pretty bold to start with.

Oh, this sounds like a great recommendation for me. I have pigmented lips and I'm always looking for colors that work well with them. Thanks, SusieQ!

Well, I never made it to the meetings and I found keeping track of points not very effective. There are so few points and, being a conscientious recorder, they were getting sucked up one point here and another there for very minor snacks, e.g., 4 almonds or 1 cracker. I don't want to pay for something that isn't effective for me.

I'm going back to recording what I eat in My Fitness Pal, a smartphone app. It gives me a calorie goal for each day and it keeps track of protein, fat, and carbs. I can record my single cracker and not have it tell me that I've just consumed a sizable chunk of my daily allotment.

Thank you, Milla, for sharing your experiences. Like you, I am going to focus on portion control, eating sensible foods and doing so in an intentional fashion. No mindless snacks. Definitely quality over quantity. Your idea of keeping a journal is a good one but, in all honesty, I probably will have all I can do to keep track of what I eat on my app. I think, however, that it has the ability to add daily notes so perhaps I could combine the two tasks.

We had 76% totality here in SF. Our fog bank and clouds had other plans though for a clear view. Since I didn't have glasses, I didn't venture outside - only kept an eye on the change of light which was still evident  But I do know people who traveled to the path of totality, and seen lots of stunning photos. Such cosmic beauty and divine perfection. For a little bit there, people didn't have to pay attention to the horrors of our current regime.

Has anyone seen the eclipse? Well, 'see' is probably not the term since you cannot look at the sun; 'experience' is a better word imo.  We had one in 1999, it was the first time I experienced a solar eclipse and it is such an odd,  eerie feeling... Do share your experiences, please!

Same here. My pension is no where near what my salary was, and prioritising makes sense. In fact I wish I had started earlier! but you know what it is like: you work hard and you fall into the trap of 'I need something to cheer me up/ I deserve this treat'... I am not going to go on, we have been here before, haven't we? But I do love to see red lipstick on some women, no matter their age!

"Nah... this is just a bit of silliness, I can't wear red. I don't think there is a red for everyone. What is the point in wearing something that does not suit you just because it is 'iconic'?" - milla

@milla: exactly right!:) I didn't even look that great in red lipstick when I was a lot younger. Yet I love it on the right other people.:) Just for me, it really does have to be exactly the right shade with complexity which is hard to find. Maybe higher-end lipsticks might have it? But with my budget I do have to be careful what I spend on makeup and prioritize what I spend on, and what I scrimp on.
