Hair treatment before using flat iron
« on: June 19, 2010, 08:03:11 AM »
Can anyone make any recommendations?

In the summer, I like to let my hair dry naturally. Part of the reason is to give it a break from all the tugging of my boar bristle brush that I use to straighten/give it body. The other reason is I don't like my hair to look too 'done' on hot summer days.

My haircut is so good that I can almost get away with it, but on the 3 days I go to the office, I neaten up the ends with a flat iron.

I can literally hear my dry hair sizzle when I do this, and that CAN'T be good!

Is there a product that protects the hair, preferably from the inside out, from the intense heat? (I don't get that sizzle factor when I use a curling iron.)

I use a real cheapie for this:  Tresemme Heat Tamer Spray.  It has 'cones and glycerin and works fine for me.

Thanks, listy. Is it just the 'cones that are needed? Because I have a B&B serum kicking around somewhere.

I poked around on Amazon and saw two popular treatments: Biosilk Silk Therapy and CHI 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray.

I wonder if the 'cones will undo the good of the volumizing shampoo. I'll probably have to clarify more often than every 2-3 weeks.

You're probably right about the clarifying.  I try to use only a small amount and so I still have volume.  Keep away from the roots, too.

I swear by Paul Mitchell Heat Seal:

THERMAL PROTECTION AND STYLE
Humidity Resistant – Ensures longer lasting style—curly or straight
Builds Body and Enhances Shine – Clean, flexible styling agents and essential fatty acids provide style memory and shine
Thermal Protection – Helps prevent damage caused by blow dryers and hot irons

Use an iron hot enough to only need to go over your hair once.

The sizzling you hear is the Heat Seal product, not your hair.

Biosilk and Chi are the same companies. The only things I've tried from them were heavy so I could only use a drop on wet hair.
Check out It's a 10. They have a lot of products that are excellent. I've only got the original but I know they've expanded the line.

If you have no product in your hair and hear sizzle, that probably means your hair is not completely dry. Be very careful because you do not want to singe your hair. It has to be bone dry before flatironing. I've singed my hair and aside from the damage, the stench is awful. Most likely your curling iron does not get as hot as the flatiron, hence the no sizzle factor.

If you use a leave-in product before flatironing, you will probably see it steaming -- that would be evaporation of the product, as Cougar said.

I'm still on no-buy month but a friend lend me one of her flat irons. I love what it does to my hair. So, a flat iron is on my list. She's using Tresemme, too. I did some searching and I've heard lots of good reviews on Paul Mitchell's Skinny serum, too. Anyone try this one?  I'll check out Coug's recommendation, as well.

Heh heh, the only thing I use my flat iron for is depotting.

Back on topic, Skinny Serum was too gooey for me, but the Tresemme protects without weighing down my hair.

Yes, I saw some videos using flat iron to depot the eyeshadows a while back but I didn't want to spend the money just for the purpose. But, now I can buy the flat iron and it will have dual purpose.  I can kinda justify the purchase.

My flatiron is only 1" wide so I may have to do what makeupgeek did and get a cheap one (she said she spent $8-9 at Target) with a bigger plate for depotting.

I saw that video, too. She made it seem sooo easy. Is it February, yet?
