Please chose the major ingredients in your face products,  meaning the ingredients being marketed to you on the packaging and not every ingredient included.  You can choose more than one as our  Serum/Day cream/Night cream may contain a different anti-aging ingredient.  Also we rotate in/out products during certain periods.

Please write a sentence letting us know which ingredient works best for you.

Thanks for playing.

Retinol works best for me.  Anti-aging care and also helps with my acne.

Normal to dry skin here - no acne - few fine lines - not reactive.  Retinol and even a mild Retin-A have a brightening, smoothing effect on me.  I often use these in combination with AHAs.

Interesting poll, Eurodivas!

I use Peter Thomas Roth products which are chock full of actives. I also combine them with Reviva ALA/C Ester/DMAE cream for my neck. I don't know which specific ingredients are working for me. :) But I like the results.

This will be a very informative topic!

Daily, I probably use nothing anti-aging.  Unless the Olay Pro X face brush counts for more than exfoliating cleansing?

But I have in my drawer:

Vit C powder from Philosopy.  Their Hope in a Bottle cream was too much for me, and I was mixing the 2 together.  Now I forget to use it.

DMAE from Derma E.   Hate, hate, hate the smell.   :-X  I try it again at 6 months intervals, and Nope!

About once a week I used to use the aspirin mask which is Salicylic acid, I guess.  Now I rely on the Olay brush for mild exfoliating.   I traditionally use the Neutragena toner with the same ingredient, and still like it when I see a blemish coming on.

I have tried a CoEnzyme Q10 toner from DHC but did not quite finish it, as the scent was not pleasant (though it dissipated quickly) and felt a bit tacky on the skin.

Essential Oils - I have rose water, jojoba oil, plus an oil and a cream with Tea Tree oil.

Since moving to FL I have been afraid to use Retinol, as they warn about sun damage on the thinner skin.  Seems like a downward spiral to me - thin skin, more sunscreen, more damage, more acids needed, more damage ----    I'd rather maintain my skin's natural protections.

Hi Tupelo,

I need to look into this brand a bit more.  I have only heard good things about it.  Will need to check and see if it is sold here.

In warm weather, at least once a week, M2 Skin Refinish is the single most helpful item. With malic and mandelic acid (the old MaMa Lotion) it exfoliates and evens my skin tone beautifully. Now, with very dry weather and skin that reflects it, I find that I need less exfoliation and more moisturizing. So just moisturizer is my #1 need right now.

I am presently using a serum with vitamins C and E and another with hyaluronic acid at night and that seems to still be helping maintain even skin tone.

Hi BettyBoop,

I have updated the poll to include Peptides.  This is what I meant by Gene/Cell technology .  I hope it is clearer now.

I have tried about 3 creams with this technology and they all irritated my skin causing strong hyper-pigmentation.

Ah, you forgot Niacin, which is currently one of my favorites. :)

I use tretinoin, Paula's Choice  8% AHA, Nia24 Skin-Strengthening Complex, and MUAC Anti-Aging Eye Cream (which has a ton of stuff in it).

Also sunscreen-- Eucerin Daily for sensitive skin spf 30-- one of the few my face can tolerate.

And my "miracle" is yoga (daily, or very nearly daily).

At night I apply SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic followed a few minutes later by their Hydrating B5 Gel (which is like a serum). I do these at night because I've read that sunlight wipes out vit. C and I want the most healing to happen at night.

I rotate my products depending on the daily issue!  Retina- micro keeps my skin clear--but the miracle is really getting enough sleep and not dtinking wine every night!  I think exercising and not eating a lot of sugar helps a lot as well.

Great poll!

My routine includes:

  • Elta MD UV Shield 45 sunscreen in the morning -- and whatever incidental SPF I get from Jane Iredale Dream Tint and/or PurePressed Powder.
  • Peter Thomas Roth AHA/BHA Acne Clearing Gel at night over freshly-washed skin. I don't have acne, but this combo of fruit acids completely cleared out my congested pores.
  • Retin-A Micro about a half hour after I apply the AHA/BHA.
  • Reviva Labs DMAE Alpha Lipoic Acid Ester C eye serum (which I apply to my eyelids to reduce crepiness) and a thicker cream made of the same ingredients on my neck before bed (also by Reviva labs)

His products are excellent. Some of them are quite expensive, while others are more reasonable. I also like the simple packaging. He had a microdermabrasion scrub that was short-lived that was very pricey; perhaps that's why it was discontinued.

Oh, how could I have left out his sunscreen! The Ultra Light is very nice, but it's a chemical sunscreen, and my face does not tolerate chemical sunscreens the way it used to. He also makes physical ones, but they can be a little goopy. I can't imagine women of color using that unless they really rub it in. I am pale, and it can me look like Casper the Friendly Ghost, but if I were spending a day on the beach or on the sailboat, that is what I would take.

I know what you mean with Ghost effect.  My Holly Grail sunscreen is Darphin Vital Protection and this is also the only Physical sunscreen I can wear without exploding with pimples.  The other line that I am loyal to is Avene.  I find their sunscreens to be ever so gentle and they blend perfectly without leaving a white cast.  Really creamy and not chalky.

I only wear sunscreen when I am directly exposed to Sun, on the beach or when I am using skin medication such as Retin-A.

I clean my face with a combination of grape seed, avocado, castor, & safflower oils that include essential oils good for aging skin. I follow with retin a and Erno Lazslo's eye emollient with retinol. In the am I use my own vitamin c with e serum. I am 64 and really like my skin for the first time in my life.

Wow.  That is an amazing testimonial.  So glad you found what truly works for you - even if it did take a lifetime to do!  I have used those oils, too, except for avocado.  I would like to try that one, if I ever see it.

I am glad to see you post a comment, taz1946!  We love to hear new ideas.

Hi and welcome, taz1946!

Do you purchase the oils separately and mix them? Or do you buy them already blended? I'd love to give a finished product like that a try.

ZuZu and Tupelo,

Thank you for the welcome!

In the a.m. I take a washcloth and go over my face in a circular motion with just plain water (exfoliates), then I use a vitamin C serum that I got from the DIY recipes index at EDS skincare forum. Just scroll down to Vitamin C and pick one. Some are simple (I think simple is best) and CHEAP. Too, the vitamin C stays fresh which is an impossible thing to monitor when you buy a premixed product. I use the C,E and ferulic acid formulation. I up the C to get a 20% value. I also add a drop of lavender essential oil for fun. Trust me, I am not a big DIYer. This and my cleansing oil are all I do. After the C dries, I use SS, Olay Regenerist, in the summer topped with MMU. In the winter when I am inside I depend on the MMU only for skin protection.

The cleansing oil is 1/2 castor (it can be drying), then I divide the remaining 1/2 into thirds. 1/3 safflower, 1/3 grapeseed and 1/3 avocado, jojoba & apricot kernal. I top it off with drops of essential oils that are good for my skin type - aging! I just eyeball my portions and use less of the drying oils in the winter & more of the other. Nothing to stress over! I bought the oils at our local health/deli food mart. They seriously last forever just stored on my BR shelf. I mix them in a cute dispenser used for oil/vinegar dressing. There is tons of info about these and recommendations on the net. Sooo inexpensive and effective! I've been on my routine for almost 3 years.

Thanks for posting the recipe, taz. I had no idea that "drying oils" existed. I would have a bunch of homework to do if I was make my own cleansing combo. Obvious, you're well versed in this!

It seems crazy, doesn't it? And yet both Ponds and Albolene (in which the main ingredient for both is mineral oil) dry my skin after prolonged use.

I make each recipe about once every 2 months. Maybe less, haven't ever really paid attention.

I'm retired so I have a lot of time to read and enjoy the research. I have read that mineral oil is not good for your skin since it is not plant based. I really don't know that I agree with that, but I do know that the ones I use work for me.

I didn't mention it but my skin is very oily in the T-zone, especially in the summer. I have never had to use moisturizer on a regular basis, even though I know they say one should, I don't. I use the Olay Regenerist serum occasionally at night in the winter. Also, I forgot -duh!-that I use a wipe like Pamper's or whatever to remove the oil cleanser.

My skin is not perfect, but I get complements. I have some dilated blood vessels along my jaw line, larger pores than I would have ordered in my T zone and a few unnoticeable sebaceous hyperplasia spots. Nothing MMU can't take care of. Still I entertain the idea of seeing someone about laser treatments. I have still not had botox or fillers. I have done an at home TCA peel with good results. The best thing I ever did for my face was having my eyes done 15-20 years ago. But the best thing for my skin was Retin-A. I shamefully admit I only started using SS 3 years ago but don't go out without it on hands and face now. Sorry for the lonnng answers!

I've had a chemical peel once and it really didn't do much for me. I think when you use an AHA and/or BHA daily, the chemical peels don't make a drastic difference. Now, a TCA peel or Obagi Blue Peel is another story. Those are very strong and leave you red and peeling for days. I don't care to go through that.

I can't find my answer in the poll but it's Renovage.
I use a Firming Moisturizer by Silk Naturals ( MMU company) and it contains Renovage.  must say, it helps me.. uneven skin, lines, definately less noticable.
So for the moment, I am sticking with this moisturizer. I like it a lot!

Even though I use retin a and BHA, my face occasionally gets to needing a good acid treatment.  I like the lactic acid from MUAC - just kind of freshens your skin without any downtime. I don't do well with glycolic.  I had a TCA peel - 18% I think - at derm.  Almost two weeks of downtime!  I now use TCA, 12%, from MUAC as a spot treatment.

Just really starting to pay more attention to my skincare.

I have used Retin A for years for jawline acne, but continue to use it for anti aging purposes and the fact that my freckles have faded almost completely.

I started using Kiehl's Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate (with 10.5% Vit C).  It is my first Vit C product and I saw very nice results within the first week.  My forehead looks smoother and has a glow.  It works excellent as a primer, too.  1 sample packet lasted me over a week, which is good b/c I hate shelling $$$ for bunk SC.

I'm thinking of getting PC's BHA next, but the reviews seems all over the place- some love it, some say it made their skin a war zone ???

Just started using Replenix Cream (with Green Tea).  I think it has helped my seborrhic dermatitis and redness.  I am also testing Glycolix Elite Ultra Lite Facial Cream and Citrix Antioxidant Sunscreen SPF 30.

I just started experimenting with OCM and seeing what combos of oil work best for me.  I really enjoy sitting down and massaging it into my face- relaxing.  I tried to talk DH into doing it for me but that was a no-go :-[

I loved it.

My skin did erupt a bit after I started using acids (and I don't usually get acne, except maybe a single pimple once or twice a year), but I have always attributed the zitness to a new product bringing buried "treasure" to the surface.

I have no science to back that up. :D  But it does seem to happen to me when I change skincare that targets pores/acne.

BHA works well for me.  I have one from Bare Escentuals that I'm using right now.  Paula's Choice also works really well

Sunscreen: I use daily.  CeraVe AM and Elta MD

Tried a sample of Philosophy Anti-aging serum and it felt really good.  It has peptides.  It will probably be my next purchase.
