Outdoor wedding Labor Day week-end
« on: July 06, 2011, 01:33:43 PM »
Okay, my lovely, fashionable friends -- I must start thinking about this right now!

Wedding outdoors, Sept. 3, 4:30, in Kansas City
Reception indoors, cocktails at 6:00 and sit-down dinner after
Bride = my niece

I think I need something new, unless I wear the dress I wore to her sister's August wedding three years ago.  My mom (86 years young) needs something, too.  Where can we start?

This is really still summer, right?  I'm thinking dressy sandals, bare legs.  Please tell me that is okay!  I get seriously hot when I'm outside and dressed up.  I'm already planning my makeup, too, and I want to do Mom's for her.  (Fortunately, we have similar coloring.)

I can't really suggest shops for obvious reasons (unless you fancy coming over for a spot of retail therapy?) but it all sounds great fun and I am dying to find out what you and your mother will be wearing. How lovely that you can go shopping together!
Just out of curiosity, what is the norm in the US regarding hats? Do you always wear hats for weddings? Here there has been a craze for fascinators in the last 5 years.
If you'd like me to send you some photos of what is in the shops here at the moment I'll be happy to do it.It might give you some ideas.

Dear milla!  Do you know that was the very first thing I thought of...that I wish I could hop over and go dress-shopping with you?  I guess I do need ideas for styles I might look for here.  I'm not even sure how to dress for an outdoor wedding at that time.  I will probably order online, unless I make a special trip somewhere with "real" shopping.  Maybe the bride's mother could advise me about how formal it will be.

You know, I have not seen many hats here where I am, but we are not fashion-forward by any means.  I did love the fascinators I saw on the ladies attending the royal wedding.  I imagine the ladies in New York might be wearing them!

Here's a couple of dresses I'd love to wear at an oudoor wedding! They are a bit more expensive than what I would normally spend... but what's wrong with a bit of day-dreaming?

Clearly, a dress-shopping trip to France, catered by Milla, would be first choice.

If that is not an option, definitely summer attire (imagine it will be pretty hot Labor Day weekend in Kansas City) and thumbs up to the bare legs and dressy sandals. Love especially the shocking pink dress that Milla forwarded -- yes!!

For your mom, I suggest a dress/jacket combo or a skirt/shell/jacket combo in a knit that is comfy, forgiving, and non-wrinkling. When my mom needed a dress for an important summer wedding last year, I steered her toward a three piece knit in bright pink with white trim. Perfect for her age, and the option of taking that jacket on and off were key. (With the elders, temperature reg seems to go out the window.). It was pricey, but she has worn that "pretty in pink" outfit to every nice event since, so she's already got her money's worth.

Oh, pretty!  Thanks for the inspiration, milla.  And yes, Linda - I like your idea for my mom, too.

Summer outdoor weddings are wonderful, but they do present challenges! Like keeping cool and elegant looking in the heat.

Definitely wear a dress with some "flow" in a natural fabric. Below is a photo of a Suzi Chin number, and a link to her collection at Nordstroms. Lots of choices there.,

Bring a lightweight summer bolero, wrap, or cardigan that you can put on when you get into the A/C later.

Wear pretty flats or a dressy wedge - no heels sinking into the turf.

Bring blotting papers for your face, and a couple of bottles of water for you and your mom. If you aren't carrying a big enough handbag put them in gift bags you can carry.

Don't forget sunscreen for both of you. Maybe hats are a good idea, too. You can add a little Euro touch to your outfit.

With any luck, though, there will be a canopy or tent for the ceremony and you can be out of the sun.

For Suzi's summer dresses (105 of them!), see:

Good tips, every one of them! I found two dresses I like in the Suzi Chin link -- thank you!

Those Suzi Chin's are great! With a wrap, like Tup suggests, you will be set. Just attended a hot outdoor wedding and blotting papers were a lifesaver; it's amazing how well they work without spoiling one's makeup.

I like these two, because I need a bit of a sleeve.  I really like some of her 3/4-sleeve dresses, if only this wedding were a bit later in the fall.

That would be my favorite one, too.  I like it in the Jam color, which is a deep, rich purple -- works nicely with my silver hair. :pretty:
