How many pairs of shoes do you need?
« on: November 07, 2013, 01:06:50 PM »
I find it so difficult to buy shoes and from your posts I guess I am not alone... I don't want to look frumpy but I cannot wear heels or narrow fitting shoes for a whole day so I keep a pair of smart shoes at work and I walk to & from work in my trainers. IAt the moment I have two or three pairs which I never use and I'm going to donate to a charity shop. In order to stop making silly purchases I tried to compile a list of essential shoes.
Here goes:
1 pair ankle boots
1 pair ballerina shoes (not completely flat!)
1 pair knee high boots
1 pair of trainers
1 pair smart shoes
1 pair sandals
1pair lace ups

7 pairs! What are your views on this momentous question? and where do you find smart and comfortable shoes?

I have just 5 pairs of shoes:

- my everyday black Nikes(my feet love comfort)
- one pair of dressy black satin flats with criss-cross elastic
- one pair of LL Bean mud boots(haven't needed them here in SF but there's always a first time depending)
- one pair of hiking boots(good for camping or other adventures)
- one pair of aquashoes(for when we go to Hawaii)

That's it! I do look at fun funky flats(like KEEN, Naot, etc.) as that's what I'd like if I had more spending money, but have to pass.
High heels of any sort are conspicuously absent from my shoe collection as they have been for decades now. My feet NEVER liked them, and I value my ability to move freely and my comfort way way over "looking amazing" when it comes to my feet.

Dear Cara, I don't want to look amazing in high  heels  but I am not very tall...a bit on the short side to be honest, and I am vain!

Im tall so heels  I do not really wear anymore. Mostly athletic shoes for everyday.

Let me go count emmm 20 in all. Lots of short ankle boots that were in style nearly ten year s ago some neglected  heels, lots of casual sneaker/walkers and a pair of ''winter'' boots.

I could stand to get rid of at least 5 pairs. A few nice dress shoes but I live in walkers now and
my Merrill 'house' sandals.

@milla: I'm not tall either - I'm just under 5'5". Still no heels - I'm fine with my height, focusing on fitness and health. I'm not vain about my feet but I am about my hair(the ONE thing I don't scrimp on when it comes to cuts since it's a difficult type to cut).

I am really bad about holding on to shoes as long as they still fit and I think I might possibly wear them again some day.  Mostly I wear clogs in the winter and sandals or flip flops in the summer.  I have a lot of sandals since I live in a temperate climate. Somewhere I have a pair of snow boots, but we don't get much snow here.  I also have dressier flats to wear on occasion, in both black and brown.  I don't wear boots at all, although I love the look on others.  Too confining and too warm for me, I'm afraid.

So...if I pared down to what I actually need, I guess it would be two pairs of dressy flats in black and brown, three pairs of clogs in black, gray, and tan, casual sandals in brown and white, dressier sandals in black and white, plus assorted flip flops which I refuse to number!  No heels for me, I'm afraid - bad knees.  (I own a cute pair of silver strappy ones only worn for immediate family members' weddings. I'm keeping them although we're finished with weddings now.)

I shop mostly in a local shoe store that has two annual sales with 50% off my favorite brands.  I love Merrell clogs and Børn or Clark's flats and sandals.  I can get the shoes that make my feet feel good if I catch them on sale.

I have one pair of heels but I've never worn them :-[....basic black pointed toe pumps.
One pair of snow boots
One pair of black leather knee high riding boots
2 pairs of ankle boots
One pair of trainers
lots of cheap flip flops
3 pairs of sandals
2 pairs of studded smoking loafers
a whole lot of ballet flats...2 pairs of black (one with gold trim, one with silver), one embroidered, 1 gold, 1 purple, 1 leopard, 1 merlot, 1 pink, 1 brown

I didn't think I had a lot of shoes but I guess I do!

Need? Well, let's see - I'm doing this on the fly and it will be interesting to think about. Haven't looked at anyone else's list yet as I don't want to be influenced and think "Oh YES, of course, I need a pair of those as well."

Two pairs of sandals - one for walking, one for glamming
One pair of walking/hiking shoes
Two pairs of pretty flats
Ballet flats to keep in the office
Ugg boots
Leather knee-high boots
One pair kitten or low-heeled party shoes

So that's nine pairs.

I have more, mainly because of the number of pairs of sandals I own. I like to buy two new pairs of sandals each summer but I hang onto and wear the old ones as well and they last me for years. I wear sandals for more months of the year than I wear shoes.

How many pairs I need is much different than how many pairs I own.   But this question really has me thinking!

I guess I just don't get rid of shoes. (still have my wedding shoes from 28 years ago).  And I still have all those really high heels that squish my toes, up on my closet shelf in boxes.  I don't know why I keep them...But every so often now, my DD (15) needs a pair of "nice" shoes and will peruse them.  And then there's a big plastic bin of flip-flops and sandals, and a whole row of boots (with paper towel rolls inserted to keep them up!) lined up on the closet floor.

All in all, I wear a small percentage of what I own, I guess.  But, I promise I'm not a hoarder!  :-[
At barely 5'2", I don't like to wear flat shoes, and actually they're not comfortable for me.  My favorite shoes right now are a pair of black, slip on, Easy Spirit shoes with a very tiny bit of wedge.
