A wedding!
« on: February 27, 2016, 12:59:02 PM »
One of my sisters-in-law was widowed five years ago. The death of her husband was quite unexpected; they were on holidays when he died suddenly of a heart attack. After 5 years she has met someone and she is getting married. Quite a turn-up for the books. She is absolutely head over heels with this man and he has never been married before, so he wants to have a bit of a do! he actually wanted her to wear a bridal gown, but she is 64 and she does not feel comfortable with the idea. She cannot wear anything too pale, anyway, because she is very fair-skinned and she would look a bit washed-out. So she asked my opinion and I thought for a while and a word came to my mind: ’silk velvet!' She loved the idea because she loves crushed velvet and anything that is a bit boho and hippyish, so she got quite carried away…I had to tell her that, when I meant velvet, I meant feminine, soft, not twee and certainly not hippy! Having always enjoyed fashion drawing, I made a few sketches for her and she picked two, which we took to a dressmaker. Today we went out looking for samples of fabric in London. Years ago, lots of department stores sold a variety of fabric but dressmaking is not too popular these days; in order to get our samples we had to go to some specialist shops in Soho. We found an amazing shop…what a treasure trove! I was in heaven. They had such beautiful fabrics! In the end we got a rosy, brown, rusty velvet for the jacket (it is very difficult to describe because velvet changes and shimmers that is why it is so lovely!) and a small print brocade-y fabric for the dress. I am really excited about this and I cannot wait to see the end result.

It sounds like if she wants boho/hippie-ish and that's her style, she should have that if she wants for her wedding attire. No rules save that she should feel like a million bucks on her special day. But the velvet sounds beautiful!:) I'm sure she'll look great with what you've all come up with.:)

I thought you would approve of the velvet, Cara! originally we wanted crushed velvet, but we have not found the right colour. The one that she is going for will look great on her, it is such a lovely dusky pink, very fluid  and it drapes beautifully.

Rosy velvet sounds so romantic! Nice that you could sketch some ideas for her, too. It sounds like your sister-in-law will have an original dress. How perfect!

So it's true that there aren't as many fabric shops as there used to be. I remember when they were abundant and there was a range of them from inexpensive to luxury shops. The luxury shops were wondrous places to visit and dream and, occasionally, shop. It's great that you found such a wonderful shop and they had what she wanted.

You would love these shops.  They are not very big and they are very old-fashioned but they are just like Alladin’s cave. In one of the shops we visited they were putting together a scrap book of fabric samples for a film production! Some of the fabrics are very expensive because they have lots of intricate beading. The colours are just  stunning! I love finding places like this in London.

Oh, I would love to see such shops! It has been literally decades since I've been in a similar shop. My mother used to make her own ball gowns when I was growing up and we'd spend hours looking at sumptuous fabrics and all manner of lace and trims. I don't recall beaded fabrics at the time. I bet they are heavy and gorgeous. How fortunate you are to live in London with such a variety of shops.
